What do I do with the piece of metal I got from the statues under the house ?

I'm stuck at a part after the letter is read by Viktor. I am told to tap the action button which the default in the instructions says it's the spacebar. It does't seem to work. I tapped as hard and fast as I could, but I still lose. I also tried "E" since that is a typical action button in WASD games... is this a bug or am I missing something??...

Really love this game so far. Lots of walking but that is okay. There are times moving in the right direction is a challenge but I really am enjoying the game. However half way through the game I keep crashing. I have ample memory, nothing I am aware of is running in the background and I am playing on windows 10. Has anyone else had this problems using windows 10? ...
