Pretty much this.
If they wanted to make a serious time travelling waifu visual novel, they could have just made a new IP. Instead they decided to take a previous IP which has fans that enjoy certain aspects of it, and then they removed that aspect, and think fans will be ok with it?
Imagine if FromSoft removed combat from the next Dark Souls and turned it in to a walking simulator.
You can't just strip away a unique portion of an IP and think people will be ok with it. Of course they won't, you're tearing the heart out and taking away what people want from it. I have no idea what Silver Cow were thinking with this, but it was an idiotic move that is most likely biting them in the ass right now. I doubt this husk of a remake is making even close to the kind of money the original and second one made, but at least that should make it clear to them that people will vote with their wallets, and you shouldn't screw up one of your most popular IPs for no damn reason.
But why did you decide to use a franchise that was most well known for it's BE? Why not write a script for an entirely new franchise so that people wouldn't have specific expectations? Sure it would require a little extra art design to make new characters and backgrounds, but at least you wouldn't be disappointing the entire fan base by taking something unique from a franchise and stripping it out for the sake of a Switch release.
The script may be good, the story may be good, but it was used for the wrong I.P. It's that simple.
I was hired to write this script. Scuttling BE was not my decision.
That being said, the fact that BE is considered to be more important than the story and the characters...
I worked very hard to make this story the absolute best that I could. I honestly feel that I really and truly added to this world of Time Tenshi with this reboot. Made everything even better than it was before.
In my honest opinion fanservice is the icing on the cake that is a solid story. So they changed the icing. That doesn't mean that the story isn't just as delicious as ever.
And for the record, I would hardly say that I disappointed the entire fan base. https://www.deviantart.com/orionpax09/journal/Time-Tenshi-Reviews-856275226
As you said, it was the icing on the cake in the originals, that really is the best analogue to use, because now it's been stripped away, and all we have is a plain old sponge cake with no icing whatsoever, nothing unique, nothing stands out. Could possibly be a real nice sponge cake, but it's just a sponge cake.
As I said, the script may have been good, the story may have been good, but it was used for the wrong franchise. Time Tenshi without it's BE is like Sonic without his spin-dash, or Mario without the fire-flower. It may still play fine, but people won't be satisfied because something is missing.
I'll never understand how you could be surprised that people who have followed them since Time Tenshi (the original) could be disappointed by this new direction. Especially in a remake of the original. This doesn't make them "entitled", it just makes me think you'll eat anything put on a plate. (for Pokemon)
Maybe this new phantom audience wants a more basic VN. They don't seem to be coming out in droves for this one or joining the Patreon to support Silver Cow but who knows? Silver Cow certainly doesn't say anything. Not that they ever dooooo
Mario Sunshine.
Mario 64
Mario Odyssey
Mario 2 America release
Sonic 1
Megaman 9 and 10 had no megabuster or slide.
If people aren't satisfied, then don't play it? If a game isn't your cup of tea then don't play it. I don't like Terraria but I'm not going to say it's crap cause I don't like it. There's criticism and then there's nitpicking. You're not criticizing the game, you're just nitpicking the fanservice, or lack there of. Fanservice doesn't make a great game. A Great game makes great fanservice.
If you aren't satisfied don't play it. The hard headed deathnell that every franchise spouts as they go under because people take that advice and nobody buys their crap again.. As you wish.
As an aside for Orion, props to you for doing your best on this project. You should be proud of that. And thats 100% sincere. Just know that you could write a fantastic story but if the people in charge of the franchise, and those speaking on their behalf, spit in the face of their fans it was doomed to fail no matter what. Don't take it as a knock on your work. It sounds like you did everything you could to make this a success. I sincerely hope you find work with a team that won't frag the potential for your efforts to be appreciated before you even start next time.
