Invictus?
Just picked this up. Should I install Invictus right off? Or play thru vanilla once? I have all the DLC, if that matters.

OP already already marked this thread as answered but anyway...

After putting more than 1000 hours into this game, getting every single achievement and more importantly using both Vanilla AND Invictus I still feel that I would be really arrogant if I commanded OP what to do since he was just asking for opinions, not commands. If I had not ever played Vanilla OR Invictus I would not even consider writing my opinion since I would be lecking 50% of knowledge to provide an opinion based on those two, similar but different, experiences.

My opinion is that Invictus is a venilla friendly mod and it adds more to the game than it may detract. BUT my humble advice -not command- is using both Vanilla AND Invictus so you can develop your own opinion on the matter.

And about mods, eveyone is free to use them or not. Far from me to pontificate about always using mods or never using mods.
We have mods for bigger boobs. Or to include coussin´s Rory face in the game.

And we have mods like Invictus that fixed many bugs and was partially adopted in the augustus patch by Paradox as they acknowledge in the patch´s description. Or mods that make a 2010 game like New Vegas playable today, get rid of thousands of bugs and restore original content.
Any person who stops a moment and consider the issue will understand a simple truth: in mods, like everything else in life we have quality work and lousy work. I tend to play without mods bur for some exceptions like Imperator BUT even so I can see many modders put hundreds of hours and love into their work for no reward. Respect.

One last consideration, in the augustus patch description it was said that it was necessary to divert resources from Tinto team in Paradox to make the patch happen. Since the are no teams working in imperator -that we know of- it seems safe to assume there is no chance to integrate anything in the game, mod or no mod.

Invictus is a very big vanilla+ experience, so you are not really going to miss out on anything without it. I would just try it with Invictus first.

Cool. I couldn't tell how much of a total conversion mod it is. Vanilla+ is about what I was hoping for.

no. you shouldn't.

On my humble opinion the Invictus SHOULD be incorporated in the game as a DLC.

Invictus is one of the best such efforts I'm aware of, in any game. It's not the typical Paradox DLC nonsense full of poorly balanced innovations but a fantastic fleshing out of the underdeveloped world map.

If you look at the notes for the 2.0.4 Augustus Patch, you may get the impression, like I did, that the developers worked with the Invictus team to incorporate much of their work into the official patch. Take a look and see what you think.

You do as you wish, I don't play any game with mods and I always enjoy them. Mods are like fan fictions, uninteresting 99% of the time.

This. Mods is when other players change the game for themselves and themselves only, but for some bizarre reason think others will enjoy it too. I want to play the game the way devs intended it, not how some random chap sees it, and 9/10 times any mod is mediocre at best. It's like playing magna mundi for EU3 and cringing all the time because it's just hilarious. And I also like how all these people always name their mods in pseudo latin as if it somehow adds in some legitimacy and superiority.

There are a LOT of mods that improve games. A LOT of them. Crash fixes, QOL, graphics fixes, unlocking cut content, camera fixes, etc etc etc. I've been modding games since Civ4, and will continue to do so. I have never once used a mod that caused problems with the game itself. There's somewhat of a learning curve, but for the most part it isn't even hard to implement if you read the instructions.

Modders don't do it for "themselves only". That's an insult to every modder who puts time and effort into their mods. A lot of them take months or years to create and keep updated, and some have a whole team working on them.

By refusing to use mods just out of hand, you're robbing yourself of a lot of things the gaming world has to offer. That's your prerogative, and there are a lot of uninteresting ones around (to me), but there are also a LOT of very good ones. Another cool thing they can do is take a buggy mess of a game and turn it into a very good one - meaning I got a very good game for $8 by installing a few mods.

Also a bit weird that you're bagging on mods on a Paradox game. Look at the mod list for Stellaris. They don't seem to mind that people are modding their game. Paradox LIVES for the modders, and often works with them closely.

I'm robbing myself of nothing, I play as the developers intended the game to be played. I have no care for what unsatisfied people want to produce.

This. But cultists can't be reasoned with. Which is especially fun since IMPROVEMENTS are almost always subjective if it's not things like HoMM 3 HD mod, which are very few and far between. So as I said, some random dude changes things as he / she sees fit but then decides to persuade others it's objective. Hilarious.

Wow, people who use mods are "cultists" now?

Get over yourself.

When i read the first comment about not using mods i thought "wow what an interesting perspective ive never seen someone have before"
But after reading the rest of the thread, yeah no. what a weird thing to be elitist about.
As an aside how would you guys even know most mods are uninteresting/mediocre if you "never use them"?

As an answer to ops actual question i have never personally used mods in this game and thought it was "okay" without them.
However reading the patch notes, the devs have worked with the invictus team directly and included bugfixes they made, into the base game in a patch 6 months back. Thats pretty much the closest thing to an official endorsement of a mod ive ever seen, so if you dont care about being a vanilla purist then id say use it.

Easy, I just have to read their content. I've found that less than 1% is worth of my interest. And I won't spend my time looking for that 1% that won't even be groundbreaking.
And again, I play a game designed by a company with a vision, a project, and that only matters to me. What unsatisfied people want doesn't. If I dislike a company's game, a mod or ten won't change that.
