There is a series of books written by Iain M Banks with a civilization similar to gabriel"s , with the same factions plus a lot of anarchy.
I think that it was possibly a source of inspiration for this game.
If you like stories with space opera , commandos and a bunch of aliens you should try these books , some themes can be pretty dark and adult though.
