It seems that steam update is sometimes corrupting game files. In that case reinstalling the game should fix things.

The saves shouldn't be affected by reinstalling but in case you want to backup manually before reinstalling here's how you can find the saves:

%AppData%\..\LocalLow\Bitten Toast Games\GardenPaws\SavesDir

If you type that into the Windows Explorer it should take you to the folder with the save files.

GardenPaws.IS is the most recent save the game will load, the increasing numbers are back ups from previous days. You can change the name of a backup to GardenPaws.IS and it will be loaded.
