Do advanced heroes become available later?

Can't help but feel dissatisfied with the starting heroes.
Lady with bear. Lady with falcon. Lady with tiger. Guy with wolf.

Feels out of place in a diesel punk Mech RTS game. Where are the heroes in mechs and power armor?

At least, would be great if we could choose our starting hero (our have sub-factions).
