New to the Franchise
So I mastered Elden Ring's combat system and after 27 new game +'s I decided I wanted more of a challenge. So I picked up this title after hearing how much praise its gotten. Beautiful game so far, but I am getting my ass handed to me left and right haha. Any tips on how to get gud at this game?

Yes, first and foremost don't play it like ER. Your bread and butter is the deflection. Treat this as something new you've never experienced before and learn it as if you've never played a single From game. Few things will trip you up more than playing it like Souls or ER.

Other than that just the classic old have fun and rest when you're feeling frustrated. Works wonders.

Like the guy above me said, don't try to play it like Elden Ring. Stealth matters in this game, and you also need to use deflect constantly. The whole flow of combat is different. So treat Sekiro like its own thing, and don't try to shoehorn all of your skills from Elden Ring in where they don't apply.

But even if you follow all of that advice you'll still get your ass handed to you. Practice and practice again lol. :praisesun:

Stand your ground, you don't really need to move around that much. Or you could play like me in the begning and never parry and only run around enemies and bosses waiting for an opportunity to strike. Even though I have learned the game and can do bosses hitless with parry, some bosses I still have basically never parried cause running around them is much easier.

Dodge only if the game tells you(basically unlock the skill mikiri counter which allows you to counter thrust attacks. A red kanji sign will pop up whenever they are about to do it. Dodging is how you activate the skill)

Do not jump unless the game tells you to(You take extra damage if hit in the air and you can hear it and it's painful to hear. Really feels and sounds like someone landed a critical on you). Yet again, a red kanji sign will pop up whenever the enemy is about to do a sweep which is when you jump. Press the jump button 2 times when they do it and you will do a double jump which lands massive posture on them. Also, regarding the red signs: They only show that you need to 1 of 2 moves but it's up to you to learn which of these is about to happen. Sweeps you can tell because the enemy will start....well, sweeping. If they don't, then it's always thrust attacks.
Your blade is everything. Rely on your deflect, don't rely on dodging and running around. sekiro is a rhythm game, each opponent has their own pattern. Get good at miriki countering too! Practice keeping your finger lightly on the deflect button sometimes youll have to deflect a lot very quickly.

Yeah, Ive been working on deflecting with smaller enemies. Hard to get down for me but I can see how it makes things easier lool
Elden rings gameplay is more like rolling until you see a break...but Sekiro is like a rithm game. Parry - parry - parry - hit - hit - parry - parry - parryparryparry - hit - hit. There are only one initial boss where you have to dodge instead of parrying, the oger.

It’s hard to learn the deflect timing and build that muscle memory (or at least it was super hard for me) but when it clicks, Sekiro becomes much easier than Elden Ring. You won’t have to get out of the way of anything because every attack thrown at you has a response. When you know how to deflect, your enemies will only be hurting themselves.

Almost every fight can be completed with just Attack and Deflect. You can’t run and deflect at the same time, so take your thumb off the Dodge button unless you have to get out of the way.

Beast type enemies are the opposite. Don’t deflect them, run around and hit them once or twice in the back before running away again. You can get extra hits in if you stagger them or throw firecrackers. If you're really good, you CAN parry them, but I've never been consistent at that.

A lot of people will tell you not to do this, but if you’re really struggling you can spam deflect. The parry window gets fewer frames with every parry if you cluster them, but it’s really helpful. Eventually you’ll start to feel the timing and you can spam less.

Perfect parries won’t break your posture, so when you’re good enough you’ll eventually almost never have to back down, which will simplify boss movesets and make each fight over much quicker. Being deliberate and aggressive will make the game easier and help you get better quicker.

Sound cues are also extremely helpful. You’ll hear “Ting! Ting! CLANG!” as you attack, and that CLANG with the bigger visual effect is your cue to stop attacking and immediately start deflecting.

Also, RUSH the Mikiri counter. Being good at that will destroy any enemy or boss that does thrust attacks extremely quickly, and it feels unbelievably satisfying when you can use it on a boss.

Last tip: Don't be afraid of the shinobi tools. Several bosses will be countered by specific ones, and they can vary the gameplay in a seriously fun way.

For bosses, yes. For basic enemies, particularly canines, I have to disagree. I played that way against them for a long while (because really, who'd going to try to parry away a dog lunging at you) until I happened to try parrying and realized that they get stunned long enough to knock them out after only one deflection. The only other bestial enemies you're going to encounter many of are monkeys iirc, besides lizards and such that you can knock out with trivial ease. Monkeys you can kind of approach however you want honestly.
Haha , sorry for the laugh but elden ring is literally the easiest souls like game , hence you get shrekt in other games. First you should have played sekiro , you would have laugh on elden ring's difficulty level :')
