Sekiro™: Shadows Die Twice

PSA if you're a noob like me: HOLD R1
If you're anything like me and came into Sekiro from Souls, saw that R2 was taken up by the Prosthetic, and assumed that you just didn't have a strong attack, that all the stealth and tools and stuff were supposed to supplement basic attacking as your only direct offensive option... well, you do have a strong attack; it's just a charged R1 instead of a different button. It's a lunging thrust that does good damage, closes distance, has comfortable range, and doesn't even take that long to charge.

I don't know if I missed where in the game it tried to tell me that I can do this, but just like when I recently played Another Crab's Treasure, suddenly my altercations with basic mooks have gone from frantic, clumsy R1-spam to quick little kills with good spacing. You can stun the poise-y axe-wielders with a single hit and then dash out of range, you can oneshot the archers doing it out of a dash, it even helps in fights against multiple enemies at once- It has enough range and closes enough distance that you can run around, position yourself, start charging it at a safe distance, and then lunge forward and still hit.

It's a game changer, and it helped me to feel a flow enough to finally, FINALLY fell Juzou after owning the game for over two years. If you're struggling trying to get into it and didn't know you could do that, give it a shot.

Ah, yes. The fun little mechanics the game fails to explain explicitly.:er_sweat:
I also recommend not sleeping on the chase and slice skill, it's probably the earliest one to get and I used it the most by a large margin. Throw a shuriken then press R1 right away to do a dashing slice to quickly gap close and catch enemies by surprise.
This is super helpful. Idk why the game doesn't tell you this.
Some enemies are very good at blocking normal R1s but are rarely deflect thurst attacks.

Charged R1s afaik do 50% more vitality dmg but less posture dmg than R1s.

There is a certain boss who can do mikiri counter so charged R1s is very risky.

Chase and slice is also very useful againts airborne enemies as you can quickly cover ground while they get knocked down by the shuriken.
I can't think of anything worse, than holding down R1 against any of the bosses.
Go ahead, do it, watch what happens.
He doesn't know..... you're gonna change your mind about thrust attacks in the future...

Also I haver never used thrust attacks in this game unless it was by accident cause I tried to activate a combat art. That's because of 2 things: 1, I probably didn't know about it until...endgame or somewhere after ng+ & 2, because...it's a bit slow and I prefer the slashing.
The charged R1 attack is a noobie's trap. It feels stronger than the regular R1 and it moves you forward, however the more you play the game the more you realize the charged R1 is situational at best.

When it comes to approaching and poking enemies, the problem with dash > R1 is there is a long delay after the dash. Your best poke is simply R1 chained into itself until deflected (for enemies who will block). Wolf's walking speed is fast, simply walk into their face and start slashing. Let them block, you eat their posture when they block. Their options are limited out of deflecting you, compared to neutral. It might not appear so at first, but this game rewards aggression.
It might be a noob trap, but I'd take finding a comfortable crutch early on that I can wean myself off of later (as i slowly get used to the fact that "enemy blocking my attack with a CLANG" doesn't mean "that's not working, try something else" like has been ingrained in my head by basically every other game i've ever played) over just never finding a way to have fun with the game at all!

While I continue to struggle to get used to dancing with enemies up close, it's a nice option to keep me afloat and able to at least explore so I don't get so frustrated that I drop the game again, hah- I almost chipped Lady Butterfly to death with it last night even, but played more aggressively today after reading some threads and definitely found it working, even if I'm still so clumsy with it that it was just about as close as my dodge-and-counter attempts lmao
the game actually tells you (once) there's charged thrust attack and that it can be deflected
It's super effective against The Owl!
