Is there a way to track the number of attempts a boss fight takes?
I've made between 60 and 90 attempts at Lady Butterfly so far, but want to know the precise extent of my failure.

What I would do is literally just write the numbers somewhere. Personally do it in discord since that's easiest for me but it can be anywhere you like, even on a piece of paper.

Also, my guy, something is seriously off if you're almost at 100 attemps with Butterfly. So, what are you struggling with?
I finally moved on from trying and defeated the bull instead - now I have more options to try further.
I'm struggling with perilous attacks. In general.
I know how to tell them apart. I know what they do and what to do against them.
However, when I've been focusing on deflecting the rest of it, it's very hard to suddenly remember that I can and need to do something else, very specific, involving a button not involved in combat otherwise (in case with sweeps), and to do it right now.
In the 3 attempts successful enough to reach 2nd phase, illusions' red kanji messes it up even further.
Writing down the # of boss fights you've gone through on a piece of paper .... 😂🤣

At 60 to 90 attempts, this man is gonna run out of paper !

With Lady Butterfly specifically, I managed to track the number by dividing the total experience gained by 34 (the number gained from killing the one guy that's on the way there).
From this, I found out that a single attempt at her takes 2 minutes on average.
(I lost count, however)
If your struggling at Lady Gaga, I made a post on how to beat her several months ago:

I read it.
There is another scenario with jumps:
- she lunges at you (and a bit past you) with a quick and strong attack
(and there's, of course, a lot more to it than just jumps)
I actually haven't noticed the "main" rhythm you described.
Turns out, the one thing everybody missed is that the tip the game gives you before this fight is meant to be understood literally.
Lady Butterfly can't block (and is interrupted by) an attack performed after a dodge - regardless of whether there was something to dodge, or not.
After I found out about this, she died in three attempts.
It was neither fun nor satisfying.
And it took me over 100 attempts total.

How... how are you supposed to interpret dodge attacks figuratively?

And whether or not there's an attack actually coming that you dodge is irrelevant, yeah. Just think of it like an actual fight: you're sidestepping to get around her guard. Humans don't track movement from side to side very well, and the same generally extends to the enemies in Sekiro.
Well, I interpreted it as "she has a special attack that needs to be dodged - and you can hit her in response".
And, indeed, she had an attack that needs to be dodged. Many of my first attempts were ended by that jump and grab.
So, I thought that this is what the tip was referring to.
I spent most of my next attempts trying to overcome the challenge presented by her incessant attacks, interspersed by perilous sweeps.
Yeah she is weak to dodge+attack but you can also just bully her and deflect+attack.

If in Air shuriken her down and while knocked down tap her a few times.

Sweep attacks are good as you can jump on her head for very strong posture dmg.

+good idea to learn where she drops down in phase 2 so you can attack her ASAP to prevent illusion summons.

The first boss I consider a skill check will be at the castle tops.

Albeit chained ogre and blazing bull also likely filters out a few players from finishing this game.
Chained ogre was not very difficult, but very disappointing.
The game was talking about its vulnerability to fire so much, that after a couple of attempts I thought it was going to have some important effect - turn the battle into a different one, or something.
When I returned with the fire, it turned out that it barely does anything, and requires a lot of effort to apply - effort that I could have spent evading.
I didn't even know that ogre had a bunch of cool moves until I later watched a video about that fight. (all I did was dodge his attacks, and hit twice between, and repeat that until he was dead. And yes, all of his attacks can be avoided in exact same manner)
all i can tell you is, learn the boss fight. you can force her into a loop, but its kinda lame.
