Seriously? thats the only way?

It's the best heal you'll have (you can also upgrade it).
I seem to remember some talk that you can can a little bit of heal when you use any ability,
or activate a very slow passive regen if you avoid any damage for a while in combat, but it's been a while since I played so I cant guarantees that.
I think there may also be weapons later that give you regen.

try using your horse and a weapon like a spear, you can go circles around him avoid his hits while you smack him, this works well on higher level mercs later in the game as well (once killed a lvl 50 merc when i was only lvl 25 this way, took a long time)

Use a bow and try to ambush him from a high point like a roof top. Get the poison skill and before you attack him with a bow enable that skill with your melee weapon and then switch to bow which will give a poison on your arrows for I think 30 seconds. Also if you wait until you reach level 5 Devastating Shot should be available and it's the most powerful ability you can get early

Here is an example of the easy way to take down Talos. Battle starts at 32:10 Note that both of these were done on Hard difficulty so they should be slightly easier for you. This is with poison and Devastating Shot

This one was pretty ugly because I didn't have Devastating Shot yet and was still a level below Talos but it does show two things, how to put poison on your arrows and how to escape and get your health back. Battle starts at 2:25

You'll learn early on that running from a fight is sometimes necessary. Assassinating mercs is huge, too, so hide when they're nearby, and ambush them. Spend time learning to execute a perfect dodge, too.
You regain health by killing enemies and by not getting hit for a few seconds. There's also the ability you can get.

But when in doubt, make like Brave Sir Robin and run away.

Devastating Shot and a couple of other Abilities also give you a slight amount of health back

When i fought him i would perform assassination hit and runs, I would wait till his ? was gone and hide in bushes near him. I would pounce on him and run away. rinse and repeat that guy was a big pain in the ass

Starting the fight with an assassin hit really helps. It won't kill him, but you can take a large chunk of his health right at the start of the fight just wait in some bushes and sneak up on him as he passes by you. Also, be sure you are at least his level, that also helps even the odds.

NOTHING is easier than the way I showed in my first video where I killed him in less than 5 seconds with 3 Devastating Shots ..... bang, bang, bang, DEAD

In fact you can kill all Mercenaries in the game that are at your level with 3 Devastating Shots from an ambush point and killing mercenaries is very important because of the upgrade discounts you get

Here I kill 3 mercs in less than 10 minutes, one was 5 levels above me, one was a level above me and the third was one level above me. I was playing on Hard difficulty with Heavy scaling. All three dropped legendary weapons or gear including the best bow in the game and also gained me 3 more spots on the mercenary ladder ... Start at 2:25
