The combo system is poorly implemented.
I speak from experience playing the GOG version last year, which I've since refunded. My reason for refunding was due to repeatedly dying in the flying section of the game because I kept dying and respawning with inadequate health so I couldn't progress much further. And that's with only the first game, I haven't played Lost Company but I wouldn't be surprised if the issue I have with the combat system were also present there.

Having a combo-based combat system in a first person shooter is quite unique as few games come to mind that do this. But I think a glaring issue this series has with them is that they game never actually teaches you anything about them. There are no tutorials that goes in-depth, no move lists to review, nothing. Even a few reviews I've seen don't make any mention of it 'cause the game itself ignores its own mechanics. Which is a real shame because it actually seems to heavily rely on it; when you do a combo, you'll get boosted adrenaline and a slow-mo effect. If I recall correctly, I believe this even boosts your damage output. But when the game doesn't even teach you about this, or what combos you have available then it just feels wasted. It would actually decrease your adrenaline if you kept repeating the same move over and over, so you'd have to spice it up. Now it's even more of an offense that the game doesn't teach you about this mechanic.

That flying level was misery. Oh man, you just brought back nightmares.

I own this one on disc and the expansion on Steam. Just found my disc copy in a box and wondered if anyone plays these on here.

They could have been so much fun but the combat was rugged as hell, even for an old game. It didn't play well back then. I finished both this and the expansion with gritted teeth...did not go back for a second playthrough on higher difficulties on either as I normally do with every shooter that I play.

Yeah, and I think where the game failed is in the combo system. Not only does the game not explain anything about, but there doesn't even seem to be an experience point system built into it, at least not that I can recall. There isn't a shop anywhere, either during intervals or from some kind of merchant, so you could never upgrade your move list. But you can't even review your move list, so there's no proper way to familiarize yourself with the combat and practice different moves and combos.

If the combo system was better explained, if you could review your move list and expand upon it, and if there was an experience point system built into it, I think it could've helped out the game a lot.
