Can't get Ferdinand to stay dead...

OK, So I got the revolver finally from the desk drawer, but when I try to shoot Ferdinand he just disappears... the text says "KILL HIM!" but I just keep wasting ammo, and have to go back to the angel in the mine to get more. which is a long walk!

What gives????

You can try to kill him with arsenic, or capture him with the rope you can get from the hanged man. Also don't forget to sail with the boat and meet the Draugen for an exp power up.
