Brilliant Cataclysm
What are the options for dealing with Alexei's mystic arte? I mean without relying on one of the "nerf-the-whole-fight" items like an All Divide.

I've gotten him down to around 50% a few times, but I just can't deal with this arte consistently enough to last the whole fight.

Tanking the hit

Tanking the damage doesn't seem to be feasible. Artes to increase physical or magical defense don't seem to be making any difference. Estelle's buffs to defense don't help with it either.

Is there something I'm missing or is this just not possible? (I'm mid to upper 40s on hard difficulty) Is there, say, some skill I'm supposed to get at lvl 48 that suddenly makes this much more manageable? Or a skill I might already have that I'm completely overlooking?

Sometimes a character survives with 1 HP, but I don't understand the condition that makes it happen. Is that something that can be done reliably?

Avoiding the hit

I've had some mild success with separating my characters so the arte isn't a full party wipe. But I can't do this reliably. I (do think I) can get characters to stand still and do nothing if they are already in good positions, but I can't get them to spread out if they're in bad positions.

And if I ask them to do anything other than stand in place and do nothing, I can't get them to stay in place. I would assume that is what the "Keep Formation" option in the tactics menu is for, but it just doesn't seem to work.

The "Keep distance" tactic works for a lot of enemies, but it doesn't seem anywhere near enough to dodge this hit.

Is this something you're supposed to be able to do reliably?

Preventing the hit

Occasionally I've been able to get through one of Alexei's overlimits without him using the Arte. E.g. something applies a good stun to eat up time, and then maybe get him to run around a bit and waste time.

I've never managed to have any success with attempting to stagger/stun/knock down bosses during overlimit, but I only seriously tried it in the early parts of the game. Is this something that can be done reliably?

Of course, that wouldn't help with those times when Alexei decides use Brilliant Cataclysm instantly after going into overlimit....

Something else?

Is there some other approach to dealing with this that I haven't considered?

How does enemy overlimit build when I attack them? Is it based on damage dealt, or based on number of hits done?

If it's based on number of hits, then there's a good fourth option: if I optimize my party to do few, big hits, that will reduce the number of overlimits I have to deal with, and thus dramatically increase my success probability.

For what it's worth, I managed to get a victory, although I'm not entirely sure what made the difference. Maybe it was the "focus on bigger hits" thing.

It's quite possible that I was just severely underestimating how much healing Guardian Frost can do. For some reason, I can interrupt his casts far more reliably with 3 hit combo then Destruction Field than anything else I had been doing with Yuri, and I had switched my plans to have Rita use overlimits for the second half of the fight, rather than leave it enabled for her the whole way through.

So if it was just the healing making a lot more difference than I could perceive, that would explain why the fight was drawing out long enough that I eventually fail to deal with a Brilliant Cataclysm.
Gale dog gives invincibility for a set amount of time

also some bosses already have the ability to ovl at round start

its not related to damage dealt but number of hits they receive

you can also just infinite him with karol/repede

One of Repedes altered Artes grants him Invincibility for a short amount of time
Estelles Force Field also grants brief invincibility, though I don't know if the sidequest is available before Alexei
Flynn has a skill that allows him to reduce taken damage by a considerable amount by spending TP

Also Overlimit Level 4 reduces your received damage to 0
