Should I buy the special edition?
I bought this version over a decade ago. I wanted to get back into it. Are there more mods now on the special edition? Did they stop making mods for this version and are they incompatible with the special edition mods?

1. At this point yea. There are more new mods being made for SE.
2. No. There are indeed still mods being made/ported to this version
3. Depends if there are backported versions of said mods

Skyrim Special Edition/Anniversary Edition is a more technologically advanced program with far better memory management and more modern scripting functions. It has higher minimum system requirements than Old Skyrim, but with a game that old most reasonably recent computers can handle it from what the Steam hardware survey shows us.

Backporting/Forward Porting. Most mods for Oldrim have been ported to Special Editon or there is a mod that does the same thing available. Most new mods are being written for Special Edition, with a few authors publishing versions for both Oldrim and Special Edition.

In terms of interoperability, this is a short version of a sometimes complicated subject:
No mod for SE/AE will work out-of-the-box in Oldrim (even a pure texture mod might be in an incompatible compression format).
No skse-based mod for Oldrim will work for SE/AE.
An Oldrim mod that contains ONLY a .esp or ONLY loose meshes and textures MIGHT work out of the box in SE/AE.
No Oldrim mod that contains an archive (.bsa file) will work in SE/AE.

For what it's worth, I switched over to Special Edition in 2019 and haven't looked back.

There is still mods being made for this version of skyrim, some mods from the other version even get ported to this version from time to time, there is also a lot of mods for this version that simply do not exist (yet) for the other ones and visce-versca.

I prefer this version, it has all the mods I use (most of them are not available for SE/AE outside chinese download sites for some reason) and add in the fact that I don't want to have to re-do my entire modlist etc.
This version have one and only mod that not avaible on se and ae. And that is unlimied mercenary mod, its only avaible on steam workshop on this version of skyrim. None of modder can port it and the original author is MIA. Pretty good mod, u can make ur own army to work for u, no more dead thralls. Usefull when u overlord with money. that is if u prefer true skyrim experience. If want hard modding graphic then upgrade to se, due to 32bit version. This game only read 8gb ram even if u have more.
