I've never been able to find a game that would be a true successor to Recettear.

Similar and yet different:
Al Fine felt fairly similar to Recettear. Not a bad game but definitly not as good. If memory serves me right it was a lot, lot shorter.
If you don't mind the idle genre there is also Cadria Item Shop. There are other idle shop management games but that one at least doesn't ask you to spend an absurd amount of money to be enjoyed.

Final Profit may scratch that capitalism itch.

Search up Moonlighter. almost the exact same premise. at the time of writing it's on a great sale, too.

Can highly recommend it. Story is amazing so far, the game is incredibly deep and so much things to explore and discover! I didn't like the dungeon bit of Recettear that much, and the exploring that Final Profit has instead, is way more fun for me.

There is a free demo if you like to check it out, but keep in mind that the game opens up a LOT after the first tutorial area, and there are many many MANY more ways of making money, a lot of upgrades and faster ways to travel and to be more efficient in your shop to unlock!
