help me understand why.
why are all horror games deeply entangle their mechanic to puzzles? please help me understand why. I didn't buy the game for a puzzle, i bought the game to see some gore and blood. refunded.

Puzzles challenge the mind and cause tension.

Would you be more afraid to be trapped in a room with a monster but you can dodge past it and run out the door.

Or more afraid to be trapped in a room with a monster but it can't get to you but you have to solve a puzzle before the door opens and you can escape.. but if you get it wrong the monster is let out and you have to deal with it first?

Might just be me but the second one would put me far more on edge.

The user-defined tags says it contains puzzles. The game description says it contains puzzles. There's plenty of gore and blood in this title.

There are plenty of horror games out there that put you in a fight or flight state where you mindlessly just try to survive till the end. But even the greatest original horror games ever have puzzles in them. I would list them all but that could go on forever.

Even Doom, where you have to find key cards to progress through the missions. Sometimes, by showing you there's a key card on the other side of the wall, leaving you with the question of how to get to it.

Even the newer Doom's, where they incorporate locked doors with having to crawl through vents, find hidden switches, use someone's hand or eye to open doors. I'd say Resident Evils had the most puzzles out of all the horror games.

It makes games more interesting and realistic. If something hellish was to happen in real life and the power grid was to shut down, you wouldn't mindlessly just be running around killing and looking for first aid kits. You would evolve and adapt to survive.

In-game, it's a rewarding experience where players progress, unlock new weapons, abilities, etc. You are more or less just describing a arena shooter where you just kill, collect health and armor.

It's an epic game that follows suit with most FPS horror games but takes the standard to a whole new level. It is twisted, nightmarish, surreal, atmospheric with a sense of beauty. It is inspired by the works of H. R. Giger.

Indeed, the best horror screws with your mind and fears.
Gore can be fun sure but it's too easy to go down that shock route.

puzzles are used in a lot of genres as a pacing tool. horror, being all about stress both in movies, books, and games, really needs controlled pacing to work. puzzles provide the player with moments of relative safety while maintaining atmosphere and dread, or otherwise provide goals for exploration.

there is a door that needs a key, so when i run into the door i know i have to go explore the sppoky meat cave for the key. when i find the key after ideally getting stressed out looking at all the meat and getting pisssed at the monsters that WILL NOT ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ MOVE OUT OF THE WAY, i then need a break lest I, the player, make my own break by just quitting the game, and doing the puzzle at the door with the key is that emotional break. i complete the puzzle and now i'm back to being stressed out again.

it's all buildup and release of tension. i don't think scorn does it well.

so basically you didnt bother to read the tags, which say "includes puzzles" didnt bother go even go past the first area etc, and then came on here to complain? if youd read the description instead of just, womp womping, youd see it...
Puzzles are scary. I hate it when there's a sudden puzzle just behing the corner.
