Access denied 0x5
A user reported that this error shows up when he wants to start Galactic Crew. This error occurred because the user's anti virus software blocked Galactic Crew. After doing some web research I found players from other games getting the same error message. The reason for their error message was either an anti-virus software that didn't like the game or the game was installed in a folder where the Windows user has insufficient rights. For example, the "Program Files" folder got more restrictions with the latest versions of Microsoft Windows.

Now, you should have unlocked the Var-class spaceship and its achievement.

Messages when launching the game

When the game detects a problem with your system after you started the game, there will be a message and a hint to come to this page. Below you find the warning messages and what they mean.

Your {GRAPHICS CARD} is not your primary GPU. This might affect the performance and stability of the game.

Many computers have multiple GPUs, especially laptops. Most of them have a built-in GPU, e.g. an Intel HD Graphics chip, and a specialized GPU like a GeForce or Radeon. Galactic Crew uses the first GPU of your system that provides all shader features the game needs. However, this might result in selecting a weaker GPU even if there is a better GPU in your system! When the game detects such a situation, the message above appears. Please follow the instructions below. These instructions are for GeForce chips. It should work similar for Radeon chips.

  1. Right-click on your Desktop and open the NVIDIA Control Panel
  2. Select Manage 3D Settings from the menu on the left side
  3. In the main window, click on Program Settings (it takes a while to load it)
  4. Click on the Add button and select Galactic Crew
  5. Select your NVIDIA chip in the combo box box
  6. Commit your changes by clicking on the button in the bottom right corner
  7. Start Galactic Crew using your Steam Client

No connection to Steam Client.

Galactic Crew uses several features of Valve's Steam API, e.g. Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud Services and Valve's P2P layer for multiplayer games. Therefore, when the game starts, Galactic Crew initializes a connection with your Steam Client. If this message shows up, make sure Steam is running and try starting Galactic Crew again. In rare cases, users had to restart their system to reset Steam in a default state.

The game crashed when initializing the UI layer. This can be resolved by installing Windows Update KB2670838.

This game uses the 3D and 2D modules of DirectX 11 simultaneously to render the game's content. The 2D part is mainly used for the user interface controls while the rest is handled by the 3D module. This is no problem with Windows 8 or later. However, this feature is not available in some Windows 7 installations. If you get this error message, you most probably miss Windows Update KB2670838. You can download and install it directly from Microsoft.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Galactic Crew run on UNIX?
No. Galactic Crew uses its own custom game engine which is based on the Microsoft .NET Framework and the DirectX API and it uses many Windows API functions. Therefore, the game in its current state is not able to run on operating systems other than Microsoft Windows. A port to other platforms may come after the game's release, if players want to have it.
