A lot of the negative reviews complain about old-school controls. Personally, I find it very strange people buy "Classic Mode" DLC and then complain it has "Classic" controls and cheap knockback deaths. It wouldn't be "Classic" without those.
A few negative reviews also mentioned having to buy the DLC for 100% achievements, and with that I completely agree. I'm not a fan of adding new achievements in general, but having them behind a price tag is even worse.
If you had fun playing Classic Mode 1, I highly recommend second one as well.
There's a reason why we left those things in the past. When we bring back old stuff we usually talk about the good things, not the bad.
In that case, it maybe is worth it? Because I didn't like classic 1 but if it's better, it might just be good enough to enjoy. And I DO think the game devs deserve (extra) support.
So are the controls like games back in the NES/SNES days?
Pretty much classic Castlevania (1 and 2) controls, yes - you can't change the direction of your jump, getting hit knocks you back, etc.
Although, they did improve it just a tiny bit it compared to classic Castlevania games so it doesn't feel as bad. For example, jumping in place doesn't lock you from moving left/right while in the air (like it did in Castlevania), you can unlock backdash and doublejump at some point that also help a lot, and they definitely did something about jumps because every time I thought I was not gonna make the jump, I still did (difficult to explain, sometimes it just feels like the game "cheats" in your favor when you're supposed to fall down, but you don't).
So yeah, you will fall down to your death (especially in the beginning, without the double jump). If it sounds too frustrating, then it's probably better to skip Classic mode 2.
That said, they probably could've implemented difficulty options like they did in Classic mode 1, where on "Easy" you don't get knocked back when you get hit. Kinda weird 2 doesn't have it.
Beware. I got classic mode 2 because I wanted to 100% the game, and I refunded it. I'm an old SNES player and to me it doesn't even feel like SNES; more like Atari. It feels VERY old school. I am still mad they did this with the achievements.
