Check your first instruction is not 'Load'.

This happened to me in both my previous game starts.

He needs to be set to 'Buy' or else he will sit there for weeks and weeks like a turnip.

This is why I cheated at the game to get the 'Auto Trading' research thing because I couldn't figure out why my trader was not actually trading.
