They are, I believe, the only place where money is actually created and injected into the economy.
Is there any reason to have habs of my own? Or is it just as good to sell to habs belonging to another company?
I think if you own the Hab, you can prevent it from trading with the AI. Thus keeping the cash injection for yourself.
I'm not sure how transaction / shipping fees work, but those may work in your favor if you own the hab in question. Not certain.
