Why does population growth matter?
Subject says it. Why bother with habitats and farms and all those needy, needy people? I've got a station complex going right now that is making tools very nicely, with no habitats involved. What am I missing?

Habitats pay money for goods.

They are, I believe, the only place where money is actually created and injected into the economy.

Its a kind of service based income, if you can supply all the 4 resource the population will grow. And more would consume you will make more $$
Ok good to know.
Is there any reason to have habs of my own? Or is it just as good to sell to habs belonging to another company?

I'm not sure as I don't have habs yet (working on cornering Electronics first) ... but:

I think if you own the Hab, you can prevent it from trading with the AI. Thus keeping the cash injection for yourself.

I'm not sure how transaction / shipping fees work, but those may work in your favor if you own the hab in question. Not certain.
