Is there anything that makes meteors worth killing?
At first I tried this with lots of small ships, but they just never kill enough of them. I mean maybe I need multiple fleets in one place or something?

Then I moved on to bigger ones but their guns... aren't great shots, it seems, except flak which utterly obliterates the meteors AND all the small allied ships in the entire area. Like flak would be brilliant at it if I could just radio these guys and tell them to go away, but I can't. I'm at the point now of using the game's biggest ships with non-flak turrets just to get sheer overwhelming numbers of cannons going, but these manouevre so slowly that their window to attack seems to dimish pretty quickly unless I'm lucky with where the meteors spawn.

It seems like relative to repairing the damage, trying to intercept is just a really bad idea. And those missions are just free bad reputation, whether I kill the things with flak and take out all their ships, or try something else and only get a bit over half the meteors before they hit something.

What's even worse is that now that I've got combat ships it seems these are pretty much replacing all the trade missions I was doing for half the game. It's like meteors > fighting > VIPs > trade.

Hmmm.

I only spent time chasing meteor contracts in one game, what eventually put me off it was that my combat ships could not take care of them on their own, if left in a sector. I felt like I had more money to be made with my primary fleet and my attention was better spent elsewhere.

But, as for killing them, this never seemed to be a problem. I had one Dragon and the automated turrets killed everything that came. When I had 4 or 5 Orcas (stock) in my fleet, they'd race head and kill everything before my Dragon could engage.

Sometimes my Dragon could shoot down 2 or 3, but I was more worried about accidentially hitting the Orcas so I found it better to hold fire.

Maybe you're having bigger meteor swarms than me, though. They seemed to grow as time went on, but that might have been my imagination. I think I started seeing around 4 per swarm, and later 8 was more common? How many do you typically see?

Oh! I think some of the weapons have been rebalanced. My previous experience may no longer be valid.

Their numbers ranged anything from mid 30s to mid 90s, the highest I remember for sure was 95. I could never quite tell if my remote ships had an effect or not, honestly.

Also it's weird, in a more recent game I didn't get the early warning thing until a while after I had some stations, and they never took any damage from unannounced meteoroids. But I researched it and bam, suddenly these things show up every few days. I hope that was just coincidence because if they're tied to the research, I will never get it again.

Well I have 5 stations so far in this game, and without the early warning tech so far none of them have been hit by meteoroids. Despite that it's actually a fair way along (I just took longer to start building than usual).

edit: eventually got one! Kind of relieved actually, although I'm curious why they're so rare now. I'll see if it picks up as I build/steal more stations.

edit2: up to 45 at a time now, and of course allied ships are getting KO'd even with regular cannons. I mean at this point I'm powerful enough that I doubt they will bother me about it, but it's just another thing to dislike about these rocks.
