Is this the Pendulum quest? Use your scanner to point around to the right general area, then move forwards and adjust as you get closer.

Yes, it is the Pendulum quest. Erm... right general area... where is ' right' in space? I guess the game puts us always in the same spot after traveling? But nothing is marked (except all the stations and some neutral people), towards what should I adjust? Is it that giant thing that has a huge pipe from the gas planet and goes into a meteor? Because I've been there and nothing is marked and going very close doesn' t do anything...

Make sure the quest is active, I think that's part of it.

Quadruple checked it... even took on another mission to switch and later come back... this is beginning to look like a bug.

Look, at the right part of your HUD, at the bottom of the screen. You should have a scanner helper.

Fly to the long pipe, the scanner will help you zero in. There does not appear to be anything to actually target... just get in close and wait a moment for the scan to complete.
It all feels very odd and trying to make sense of "reference point A, B" Etc. just adds to the confusion.

Well, all of this didn't work for me. Never played again :-(

You have to look at the bottom of the screen and try to make the red writing become green. Sometimes the spot to find is quite small, and these "red" numbers do not correspond to the distance you should travel. You will find it along the pipe, but the indications are wrong.
Not a bug, just a poorly implemented quest.
