MAJORLY disappointed
That ending? Such a letdown. I thought the captain had made some sort of magical bargain and sold his soul or something to protect his ship, but it turned out all he did was poke the captive mermaids until they told the kraken to leave. Why was that arbitrarily blocked off until the end like it was the buildup to some dramatic climax? I was so excited and scared to find out exactly what the captain did to make the kraken leave. And now there are so many unanswered questions, like "why were some of the men going insane?" and "what exactly was so special about the shells?" and "why was the captain so determined to stop the other three from getting the shells, only to kill himself immediately afterwards?" The whole game seemed to be building up to the missing chapter, but it turned out to be nothing at all.

Not telling the whole story is storytelling too.
Stories that absolutely belt you over the head with the plot are very common.
Would it lose its charm by giving you everything you want to know?
What would it really gain by telling you everything you're asking for?

The captain didn't want to let the crew take the shells because they're magic and obviously dangerous in the wrong hands.

He checked himself out because he'd just personally killed the last of his crew, including his brother in law in self defense, after losing almost the entire crew, including his wife. Feeling personally responsible for...55? Deaths weighs on the conscience.

The crew were going insane because everyone around them was dying horrifically, and they were witnessing people getting shredded by sea monsters.
