This Game and Resolution
If you've been in the options you'd know there is not a lot in terms of settings. TLDR pixel scaling can be a bit funky and to get a resolution without borders with the "sharper" setting you need whole number ratios (idk how to really explain it) of 1600x900, so for 4k you can change your monitors resolution to 3200x1800. Basically just multiplying 1600 and 900 by a whole number. In this case 2.

After randomly poking around in the games code and looking through various nvidia settings , i found just changing your monitors resolution was a good result without a ton of effort. But maybe you can find something better and leave a comment. Good luck and have fun

I like to think of it like running a Nintendo 64 game on real hardware vs emulator. Emulator is much much sharper and cleaner, at the expense of quality tanking because now a CRT is not smoothing out the video signal.

There's nothing wrong with seeing the black borders. Works fine, I liked the "fit-to-screen" only because it reminded me of how games used to take advantage of the low resolution of screens.

To each their own. I wonder how it would look at fit-to-screen with something like an mClassic upscaling it.

I would play it either way, it was more a curiosity thing wondering if i could find a solution. Similar reason to playing the game lol. On my monitor there where black bars on the top and bottom making the image tiny. I'm fine with black bars on the side, and id bet the game look great on a crt even. However I don't really wanna be squinting over things. I get that when you're doing pixel art interpreting half a pixel doesn't have a great solution, and is best solved by designing a game from a certain way. This makes for a nice compromise since i wasn't a fan of the smoother video setting and I wont demand the devs try and fix something not really an issue.
