There's nothing wrong with seeing the black borders. Works fine, I liked the "fit-to-screen" only because it reminded me of how games used to take advantage of the low resolution of screens.
To each their own. I wonder how it would look at fit-to-screen with something like an mClassic upscaling it.
I would play it either way, it was more a curiosity thing wondering if i could find a solution. Similar reason to playing the game lol. On my monitor there where black bars on the top and bottom making the image tiny. I'm fine with black bars on the side, and id bet the game look great on a crt even. However I don't really wanna be squinting over things. I get that when you're doing pixel art interpreting half a pixel doesn't have a great solution, and is best solved by designing a game from a certain way. This makes for a nice compromise since i wasn't a fan of the smoother video setting and I wont demand the devs try and fix something not really an issue.
