did this get a texture overhaul post launch?
or have the new textures been there since the beginning? i adore this game, i own it three times over - ps2 (launch copy), og xbox and steam - but i was just playing the BC version on series x and coming back to the steam version there's an obvious facelift. can't recall if this is how it launched or not

Yeah. The re-release which you can find here and then on Nintendo Switch already shipped with some HD textures based on my original hobby work, but I have been adding more and more restored and improved textures and visual flourishes from time to time.

Check out the changelog here: https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/app/606710/discussions/0/1486613649677940682/

You can also try out the experimental Sphinx version with more complex lighting and shadows by switching to a beta Steam branch, as shown here: https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/games/606710/announcements/detail/3707083046414961378

The Xbox backward-compatible version was made by Microsoft, and it uses their own special emulation and tweaks to make it run the original Xbox 1 game at higher resolutions.

Let me know if that helps. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The developer behind this port started out by making an HD texture mod for Dolphin/GameCube emulator and I guess THQ Nordic noticed them before it was finished.

A developer of this app has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

interesting. and i'll definitely check out that experimental branch. i think the overhaul is good work but if i wanted to play with the original textures is there a way to revert?

Sure! You definitely can.

It's as easy as opening the local game folder by right-clicking on the Sphinx entry in your Steam Library, then going into the _bin_PC > texoverrides folder and deleting (or moving) every .DDS file you see (and maybe every .PNG file too if you really want to go all the way in by making the HUD blurry. Except for the font*.png ones, I recommend always leaving those there because pixelated fonts look terrible).

Verifying the game data from Steam should bring those files back in a jiffy, so feel free to experiment without fear. Let me know how it goes.

PS: You can even delete textures while the game is running and see them change after a level load without having to restart the game.
