No Hentai is Actually a Problem
Let me get something out of the way up front; I know that a story can be awesome without hentai. The Grisaia series however is known for having hentai scenes.

This new series was funded on Kickstarter. In other words, the intended audience wasn't just Japan. I cannot help thinking that the developers made the decision not to have hentai in order to appeal to a broader audience.

It's not the fact that the new series has no hentai that bothers me. It's the fact that the developer may have felt pressured to alter its product to appease non Japanese audiences.

Japanese developers ARE being put under pressure to censor their products. Look at Kandagawa Jet Girls. That game is from a developer with a history of making fan service heavy games, but this one has very little fan service, and what little it does have is very tame. Censored to meet Sony's hypocritical standards which says fan service in Japanese products is not okay, but they will allow gross ♥♥♥♥ like the sex scene in The Last of Us 2.

Even PC only releases aren't safe. Developers either don't include adult content or they strip it out in fear of Steam's ban hammer. Developers should not feel pressured in this way. The ESRB exists for a reason.

I know this post is a year old but i thought i would contribute as someone who was a former writer for a anti-censorship gaming website

Honestly i dont agree, everyone ive talked to enjoys the game and the anime for its story and characters not for the sex scenes.

I highly doubt this was the case, maybe if we were talking about games on consoles to avoid a AO rating which for consoles tends to make the game DoA since they cant be sold in stores or the storefront due to legal liability issues.
But on PC thats never been a issue

PC versions kind of are safe tho, they just require a additional step.
Steam may not allow it which i assume is due to the earlier legal liability issues (tho there is a undeniable double standard on steam) but developers still release patches that restore the nsfw content on almost all these kind of games.
Hell the original Grisaia trilogy went this route.

Goodness has it been a year? Wow.

You're right actually. When I think about the Grisaia series, what I remember most fondly is the characters and stories. The Grisaia series always had H scenes though until Frontwing went to Kickstarter to fund more novels. To me that is very suspicious.

Honstly that might be due to kickstar since here they list "pornographic content" as prohibited items https://www.kickstarter.com/rules/prohibited?ref=rules

I've seen many kickstarter projects that one of the goals was 18+ patches or games that contains 18+ scenes. The main difference is that the games isn't the soul focus on sex and more focus on the story. What isn't allowed on kickstarter is straight up porn (aka the story is nothing but sex sex and more sex).

There could be many reasons why they've decided to break away from including h-scenes and I'm sure it was a decision made long before they've decided to go to kickstarter. It could be as much as thinking adding in h-scenes will cause the story to not be well or the h-scenes would seem forced or something.

Honestly the older I get the more I find visual novels that contains h-sense needs to impress me by how they incorporate it into the story, like, does it add anything to the story? Does the scenes transition to it is natural?

Good example of a VN that I played with the 18+ version where I really didn't like was Nekopara Volume 1. The sex scenes just seemed forced to me and the VN would had been a lot better off without those scenes. I might replay the game one of these days and play the all age version instead and see if the story is any better but ye.

Anyways, ye, my 2 cents.
