How is this game doing?
I love FP and 2 deserves a thousand times more publicity than it's getting. It frustrates me that it recieved so little coverage despite how exceptional it is. So much time, love and effort was put into this game and it's just such an amazing product in general- not to mention it satisfies me as a Sonic fan. I try to get the word out about FP whenever I can because I'm fearful of Galaxy Trail hanging it up because of bad sales or something. What is everyone's takes on this?

They announced the sales back in November and they seemed pretty positive about it. FP2 does feel a bit overlooked unfortunately, but that's expected of most indie titles.

Expect more talk about it when it comes out on console. I wouldn't be surprised if most of their sales for the first title was from the Wii U / Switch.

Yea, I feel like FP2 is quite heavily overlooked, even though it's a very solid fun game.
The only reason I ever found out about it? One of my friends bought it on Steam like 2-3 months after release, and I saw it on a "Recent Activity" tab which I only checked out of pure boredom.
Another thing. While it's admittedly an unreliable indicator, one can use the amount of fan work present, like fanart or fics (yes, yes, including THAT type of stuff) to check how active the fandom is. For FP2 the situation honestly doesn't look so good, and most of the stuff actually predates the release. As a very bright example, if you go to, say, fanfiction(dot)net, you'd find out that FP series has 6 pages worth of stuff, yet NONE was posted or even updated since Feb 2022, which was a year ago and 7 months before the release of FP2 in Sep 2022.
Normally, you'd expect such an event to produce a noticeable wave of fan content on all channels, given the new lore and characters. However, there was hardly a bump if any at all. If you take the infamous "monosodium glutamate" imageboard (if you know, you know), there were just 82 new FP-tagged pictures posted since the game release out of 1700+ present on site total. To be clear, in no way am I trying to diminish the efforts of fans and their creations. I'm also not advertising anything, especially the imageboards, given the nature of most content posted there. Just crunching some cold hard numbers here and sharing some concerns.
I'm not saying if fan works are good or bad, but they produce ripples which people notice giving the game more exposure. For FP2, however, the whole release seems to have gone in basically stealth mode, both in official channels and the fan stuff.

There are a small number of creators on the likes of Twitter and DeviantArt that are constantly making new fanart. But yeah it is mainly the same people consistently doing that sort of stuff. The game was sort of launched as like a community thing almost, where those already in the know and paying attention who are an active part of the GT community were rewarded.

I know in Johnny's review he mentioned the fact that the game came out so close to Splatoon 3 means that the attention on social media was more on Nintendo's new game, not to mention that the game came out on the same day as a State of Play AND a Nintendo Direct. Then amidst all that was also the Tokyo Game Show where Sonic Frontiers was earning rave reviews so at the audience which would be most receptive to this game their attention was more focused on the upcoming Sonic game so there wasn't really any time to give attention to smaller indie projects. It took Johnny until AFTER Frontiers came out to get around to reviewing FP2.

So I think the timing of the launch as well as the many years in development as people just got frustrated waiting for the game to come out and stopped paying attention as a result. GT are not very good at marketing and Youtubers like Somecallmejohnny and The Completionist who could have given a big signal boost for the game either were too busy or due to mitigating circumstances like the collapse of G4 could only drop a single tweet acknowledging the release of the game. So there wasn't really anyone major who could call attention to the fact that the game had released and the people who were expected to be the game's signal boosters couldn't do it at the time of the game's launch.

The game is however selling at an overall better rate than the original apparently.

If the switch port can make it into An indie round up or even better a full direct they will be golden
Aperson 7 fev. 2023 às 4:30
That will all depend on the timing of whenever they're able to announce the console versions and whenever Nintendo next decides to do an indie world. The two might not line up.

Good news is that the game is doing well for the devs. It’s selling far better than Freedom Planet 1 did back when it was only a Steam release.

Despite that, it’s still not talked about nearly enough for the reasons Aperson mentioned. I’m hoping the console release changes that. We don't know who it is yet, but they have a publisher helping them out. It seems like that they’re gonna help push this game marketing-wise.

If I recall, I don’t think they even sent review codes to the major reviewers (IGN, GameSpot, etc) yet. It seems like they’ve been holding off for the console release.

Also because I think development overran and they only finished actually making the game two weeks before the game was due for release due to mitigating circumstances like Sabrina's hand injury.

The big problem the console release could face is if it comes out at the same time as Hollow Knight Silksong which is due sometime this year.

Shoot, I did not think about that... I haven't gotten into Hollow Knight myself (may change that in the future maybe), so I just forget Silksong was even slated to come out this year.

Hopefully that doesn't end up being the case, though. I really don't want to see this game get overshadowed a second time.

Well however much they've sold, it's about to be plus1, just for the excellent high-framerate support. Having a fast-run/soniclike that actually can go fast is a breath of fresh air, and I'll buy this at full price just to show support for it!

On a certain webpage, there's already 10 pages of freedom planet 2 fan art, with about 23 for the total for both games. That's not a bad uptake, at least at a glance.
Maybe twitter just hates on furries?

strangely it does not trend on Steam front page all those months
Aperson 8 mar. 2023 às 16:18
I think certain types of games just don't tend to do well on Steam regardless. For instance, I don't think the audience for anime aesthetic games is particularly big on Steam. There was a video someone did regarding what types of games tend to well on Steam and which don't.

I guess you have to tell yourself, if you had to sell this game to people you don't even know, how would you go about doing it in a way that sounds appealing?

I am waiting for the switch version.

I am a Japanese Freedom Planet fan, but it seems that FP is hardly recognized in Japan. It took a lot of time from FP1 release to localization, and I don't know how long it will take to localize FP2 as well. Even if you search Twitter only in Japanese, most of them are my tweets. I played the Nintendo switch version and the steam version of FP1. FP is my favorite game, so I want more people to know about it. I don't understand English, so I want you to do your best in localization. (This comment was translated from Japanese by google translate. Sorry!):lilacstare:

To be honest Sonic is also much more popular in the west than in his home country.

正直なところ、ソニックは彼の母国よりも西洋ではるかに人気があります.

Yes,there are Sonic fans in Japan, and I love Sonic series, but I don't think there are as many Sonic fans in Japan as there are outside of Japan.
