[RESOLVED] Win7 is temporarily unsupported after required 3rd-party support temp drops
We had an emergency security patch the other day for Photon (our mplayer servers - we'd be offline without them) that uses WebSockets - at the top of Google, you'll notice WS only works for Win8+, sadly.

However! They assured us that this was temporary and that they are actively working on a workaround to allow Win7 support. I have been testing some of their builds and we got past the login screen, but ran into a new bug. Long story short: They're close, but not yet. No ETA, but they're active - shouldn't be too long.

If you wanna play NOW, there are some workarounds in our Discord @ https://discord.gg/tol in #timeouts-cant-login - you can optionally upgrade to Win10 now (there are nice debloat apps in the pins: It's way better than it used to be) or wait it out.

Reminder: OFFICIAL Microsoft Win7 support drops in January! You may want to upgrade whether we fix it or not.

This is dissapointing, I had already waited for about a month for a windows 7 fix, now I find out it's going to be at least 2 more months.

You had a game that worked fine for windows 7 for years then suddenly made security upgrades that makes the game unplayable with windows 7. Was there really no other way to fix the hacking problem? Like turning off the admin mode for the version of the game you released?

Windows 7 is still a popular OS, with a huge chunk of the market. I can't imagine I am the only one affected by this despite the game having a small playerbase.

Despite having said this I will be potentially upgrading to win10 soon, but not yet, I am also aware you are an indie company and you might not have that much resources so I will still be rooting for you.

Hmm, source? I surely didn't say this. It could be fixed tomorrow or in 2 weeks from now - I have no idea. Depends on our game server (without it, we'd be an offline game). However, they're actively working on it. I know because I have to spend the time to test with my 1fps Win7 VM.

Indeed, that's what happens when Microsoft says they're going to stop security updates in 1 month. Since we're indie, we rely on 3rd-parties: If they lose support, we lose support. That's why 32-bit support was dropped a while back -- all indie games are like this. If I made my own game server, I can surely tell you that the game wouldn't be $9 and gold shop would be way more expensive - and probably would've been an extra year until release :P

1~3% active Win7 users for the game. However, if I could do some voodoo trick to get magic support back, I would. Required 3rd-party libraries - not just something trashable like analytics, but it's our realtime game server SDK. Yes, it was the only solution to the hack - upgraded to WebSocket which requires win8+ to close an exploit (caused by outdated network stuff -- which is another reason to upgrade to Win10 because people had 2 decades to figure out how to hack Win7 with ease). They're doing workarounds as we speak, but we gotta wait for them. Since we didn't make it, there's nothing we can do except help them test.

Much appreciated~ We tried to support many varieties of systems and architectures for a long time. However, over time, that tunnel gets more-and-more narrow. Our game server has repro'd the issues, so it's only a matter of time until Win7 is fixed. Regardless, I'd still recommend you upgrade since security update drop is a big deal. If you join the Discord @ https://discord.gg/tol in the #timeouts-cant-login channel, see pins for a nice free "debloater" tool for privacy + junk. Win10 is actually good now with this tool.

Thanks for your lengthy reply. I didn't know such a small percentage of this games playerbase was using win 7, thats more relevant than what I found on a quick google search which was close to 30% of general users using win 7.

Also I misunderstood the last part of your text where you said

I thought this referred to the windows 7 support for this game and not the windows 7 updates.

Anyway, thanks for the reply.

Oh - that % only applied to our active playerbase. Other games may differ~ Our overall [including inactive before the temp support drop] playerbase is like 6% Windows 7. Mac/Linux, when we supported them, was <1%.

We're actually testing [another] fix - hop in Discord #test-realm-chat if you're around @ htttps:/discord.gg/tol
