August’s release focuses on a lot of clean-up as we head towards an LTS release later in the year - some old or underused platforms have now been removed; many project-saving, performance, or stability changes have been made; and we have made a big improvement to tile-encoding in rooms, which does require a change in project version because older GameMaker versions will not be able to read those tile layers (so please do read the release notes linked-to below!).

In addition to those very important stability changes, we also added: Feather has a lot more customisation options in Preferences; several more filter types can be found in the Room Editor; new audio functions/arguments so you can control playback more easily; the browser-based platforms now support the use of virtual keys and clipboard functionality in your games; and rollback now supports chat functionality.

This is an important bug-fix update to the original .0.23 release, as it fixes several in-game bugs and also some submission issues for console developers. There are also some more fixes for Feather and various other improvements throughout.

June’s release brings Feather for everyone who wants to try it, and includes lots of fixes for Feather and also the current Syntax Errors system; adds 5 more Filter types you can use in your games; introduces more functionality when creating and using your extensions; brings microphone support to the Opera GX target; changes the Switch crash-reporter to be Nintendo’s own system; and fixes a number of issues with the collision system.

Be aware that this release updates the SDK versions you will need for a number of platforms - almost all consoles require newer versions now and also you might need to update your NDK for Android YYC - so please do see the Required SDKs FAQ for further information.

Mac users, we're very sorry for the extra delay, but we have a final issue to fix first before we can release the update on Steam, so you will continue to see 2022.3 for a little longer. If you're excited to upgrade asap, then remember you can use the non-Steam version also.


Welcome to the new May 2022.5 version! We hope you find it worth the little wait since March’s release. This is a very comprehensive and exciting change to a lot of the underlying GameMaker tooling and functionality - although, if all goes to plan you perhaps won’t even notice most of our hard work.

Even with all the changes to our build system, the installers, the IDE, and most of the runtime tools, we still found time to introduce some new features and so you can now enjoy the new Sound Inspector and its waveform visualisation, the new in-game timers system and clipboard support in HTML5/Opera GX, a new Windblown Particles effect to use in your games, and several others!

You will notice that the last bit of the IDE and runtime version numbers is much lower than it was previously - this is correct and simply a result of our new build system.

2022.3 IDE changes several branding names and does away with the concept of picking a choice of code editor before you start your project and instead allows you to pick the editor style you want, when you want it; ships with 4 new localisations (Japanese, Korean, Polish, and Italian); adds a new dropdown to pick if you want compressed QOI images or not and whether to drop back to the old .png system instead; and several new filter types have been added for you to use in your games.

Runtime changes introduce Opera GX YYC support for everyone; enables video playback functionality on almost all platforms (UWP is not being implemented); two new audio falloff models have been added: audio_falloff_inverse_distance_scaled and audio_falloff_exponent_distance_scaled; and changes all Ubuntu builds to use Steam’s new Linux runtime tools and can now create a more consistent cross-distro “AppImage” package also

Accordingly, the Opera GX target has a brand new setup guide so you can configure YYC builds and the Ubuntu guide has been updated to state the extra packages you need. Please see their guides and the Required SDKs FAQ[help.yoyogames.com] before attempting to build for these platforms.

This is a small but very important update to fix running games on Windows 7, an issue with Included Files which could cause Opera GX games to get stuck when loading, and also to add a warning dialog when trying to open a "too new" project.

2022.2.0.614 introduces a new ability to create text tracks/instances and animate these within your sequences, then draw the text later in-game. It also changes a long-time GameMaker behaviour that arrays will make and edit a copy when you pass an array into a function, and so we have added an option to maintain the old way if you want. As well as these two important additions, there is the ability to send text to a secure websocket, to define colours in the code editor using CSS web standard values and for this to appear correctly in your game, and also a range of important bug fixes.

Please note that projects created or opened in this version and future versions are NOT backwards compatible with 2022.1 or older versions, due to the new Text-In-Sequences functionality. Any such projects will be flagged as "read-only" when loaded into an older IDE and you won't be able to work on them, so please make sure to create a backup of your projects before opening them in this version.

Steamworks users: Please also be aware that you now need to use our Steamworks extension from {LINK REMOVED}its page on the Marketplace and include this inside your projects if you wish to publish games to Steam - the runner has been cleaned of all its old in-built functions and so there are no longer Game Options or most Preferences for Steam setup, as this is all now configured for your project within the extension once you have added it.

Beyond that important Steamworks change, the matching runtime version introduces a new game option for toggling whether games should copy arrays when writing to them, enables the text-in-sequences and CSS functionality already mentioned and fixes a number of headline 2022.1 issues.

2022 Update 1 is rolling out now to fix some of the biggest issues in the original release - IDE is now v2022.1.1.610 and Runtime is now v2022.1.1.483

Full details can be found on the usual release notes pages above, but this one fixes games crashing on Windows 7, cases where using the Mac IDE to build for macOS couldn't find the game executable, that games could not connect to Steam properly on startup, and some more collision issues.

Welcome to 2022.1!

This IDE fixes a number of stability or performance issues reported over the last couple of releases, plus a number of hotkey support issues in various editors. It also adds extra functionality into the Inspector, including the ability to apply a filter/effect target to a single specified layer in the Room Editor (also via new in-game functions), and a number of productivity improvements and misc UI tweaks to make editing your projects faster and easier.

Be aware that this release ends support for our Remote Worker tool and so this is not part of the installer any more. Going forward, please just use the Windows and Mac IDEs directly on your machines.

The matching runtime version changes the format of all images in-game to lower build times and package sizes, adds the ability to connect to secure websockets on almost all platforms, fixes a performance issue building large projects on the Mac IDE and enables simulator use on an M1-equipped Mac, as well as raising the version of Gradle used during Android builds and introducing support for the newest SDK/NDK versions.

Note that there is also quite a substantial change to collisions, as bounding box values are now floats rather than ints - this increases accuracy and fixes a number of long-standing bugs. You should test your games carefully, as you may need to make changes to your code in response to this fix; however, there is also a new compatibility mode in Game Options for if your existing projects need to maintain the old way.
