any advice on what weapon to pick up next?
beat the base game with a hammer and decided to switch to GS for the dlc, but its a pain to use tbh, plus I nearly timed out twice (on barioth and the tail-sword fella)

Lance. Simple but effective. Block and counter everything. Laugh in the face of the greatest threats nature can throw at you.

You should use whatever seems interesting to you - if you like it, you'll be more inclined to actually learn all the nuances of how to use it well.

That said, I feel like charge blade is kind of the perfect weapon, especially if you like to play solo. It covers all the bases - it will hit fast and has good mobility in sword and shield mode, but with slower, massive damage bursts in axe mode. You can use that mobility and roll for evasion or block/guard point with the shield and hardly move at all. It does slicing damage to cut tails, but also big bonk damage for KOs. It can be very simple (fill your phials, charge your shield, go to work) or as complex as you want it to be (guard point with instant AED reaction counters, flipping in and out of axe mode for a single hit), and when you get really good at it, the combat flow is a beautiful dance. It's really a "play it your way" kind of weapon that does it all.

...and hitting a monster in the head with a full pizza cutter SAED is big time fun.

Insect Glaive, if only to swap up your mobility options. Though I second the choice for Lance.

Hammer is a really mobile weapon so lance and gun lance which are both more on top of the monster would be a nice change of pace plus gun lance has three different play styles (shelling types) so there's basically three times the chance you'll find the gunlance enjoyable. Hunting horn would be a weapon much more similar to hammer but at the cost of some mobility, you can get special buffs depending on the horn you're using.

Go for HH, its kinda hammer but with music(buffs)

Sword and board. Most under rated weapon imo. Can block attacks like a lance without the loss of mobility and has quick attacks.
For the start, use easy weapons so u learn how the combat works, then when u properly learned how the combat works u can start having fun and learning to use some skilled weapons

Hope i helped u

You can easily say the same for Switch axe, save for the defense aspect, when you're not being barked at you're playing wrong for not spamming ZSD.

Flowing, endless combos that can weave in-and-out of attacks while racking up decent damage and statuses (My go-to is a Safi Para-exhaust).
why would you change at the dlc point when the game gets hard lol you spent all that time learning hammer and probably barely know how to use it properly and you switched lol how about using the weapon you started learning ! ior go back and play a bunch of base game learning a new weapon !
