Too much ships

It's often that there is more ships attacking at once, there is no chance to destroy them all. Is this on purpose? or is this a bug that any one else is having?

Which game mode are you playing? IIRC, in the Campaign mode, it's possible to clear each level without taking damage (although I haven't played campaign mode in years).

In Survival mode, it escalates until you lose.
