Early Access!?

We completely understand reservations over the Early Access system. We know the pitfalls of Early Access and will avoid them with Dire. Instead of taking the community through 90% of a game’s development, we are only doing the last 10% of polish/balancing/bug fixing and so on. If you do not want to help us find bugs, fix typos, and suggest polish but still want to play the full release then please make sure Dire is wishlisted and wait for the approximate full release in about 2 months.

What is the Early Access release date?

The Early Access release date is September 7th.

What is the price?

The price is $9.99 USD with a 10% Early Access launch discount.

Full release price will increase by 50% to $14.99 once full release happens.

Demo?

There won’t be a demo ready and available at Early Access release but we will be releasing one in the future.

Is Dire for me?

If you loved the first Faerie Solitaire / the challenge mode of Faerie Solitaire Remastered then there is a good chance you will love Dire too. Dire dips more into the sinister of dark fantasy than the other games. Dire also focuses much more on character driven storytelling.

Is Dire a visual novel?

Strictly speaking no. Dire is a hybrid of multiple genres. The story telling in Dire is much more frequent than with our other games, but if you are only here for the solitaire then you can easily enable Story Skip in the game’s options menu.

When will updates happen?

Small ones frequently, big ones weekly. If the more frequent updates annoy you then disable auto-update on the game and force an update when you want to see what’s new. The last stretch of development is still a journey you can be a part of so give us your feedback on any issue and there is a good chance we’ll address it in an update.

Why Early Access?

Dire needs a bit more development time until it’s ready for full release and we want to open up the last bit of development to solitaire fans so that we can all ensure that Dire is the best solitaire game possible. We need feedback on balance, polish, and anything else you think is important based on playing.

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

Dire will be in Early Access for approximately 2 months. We know how important it is to not linger in Early Access forever… that is why we’re only using it to get feedback on the finalization of this game after primary development already happened.

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

Most of the content and features are already near a level of completion and will be made available over the Early Access timeline (we may obscure / blur unfinished work). Mainly the differences between the Early Access version and full version release will be better balance, less typos. Don’t expect major changes from what is presented (we have already spent much development time on iteration already), do expect many polish improvements toward the game coming completely.

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

The first version will have 8 chapters of the Adventure story mode available, but final character art is not included yet, and chapter backgrounds are blurred for the first build. Each chapter has 3 layouts - this is a pacing decision to make the story and gameplay happen closer together than before. Zero pets are available (you can collect some eggs but we are blocking off the pets screen for the very first build). 20 achievements are available. If you have played our other solitaire games you know what this means and you may have an idea of what to expect to come after. There are things obviously temporary assets and things obviously missing but we've still tried to make it as presentable as we could in time for the first public Early Access build.

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

The price will increase by 50% at full release.

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

There is room for feedback on content and features. For the most part the major strokes are already done and in Early Access we are mostly only looking for feedback on balance, typos, and areas where you may feel there is not enough polish yet.

Will there be paid DLC?

We don’t have plans for paid DLC on Steam.

Where is the X?

If you feel there is something missing in Dire that is familiar in our other FS games then there’s a good chance we are already planning to release an update with something like it included in the future. We’re not going to talk about these updates until they happen though so you’ll have to wait and see what we add in the future. If there is something you really want added do let us know!

What is the purple bar?

That is the XP To Next Level for the player profile. Right now the only thing player level does is slowly increase permanent luck in small amounts.

What can I spend my Pure Gold on?

Nothing right now. Consider it as a kind of high score until you inevitably have things to spend all of your riches on!

What is the e1.2.1xx?

This is the version of the engine. We use Defold for our game engine now. This is next to the version in some places mostly as a sanity check for us to quickly make sure the game was built with the latest engine version.

I thought Dire was supposed to be hard? I already beat all of the chapters!

Others who have played previous beta builds can attest to how challenging we can make layouts. The real challenge is yet to come...!

Hey, I just got a few questions, I couldn't find em anywhere, but I might've just missed em as well.

1. "The first build won’t let you change the difficulty once you create a profile so choose wisely."
Can I presume that I will be able to change the difficulty of my current run after full release of the game, unless of course one have to force a reset of the saved data as you mentioned it might happen, but were unlikely for the full release?
I'm asking cause the achievement Zilch Deck "Complete a layout without any manual deck draws." might actually be close to impossible on the hardest difficulty.
I'm also too "scared" to try it, but it looks like one can have more than one profile with different builds at the same time?
If so, it's all good.

2. Is the achievement Touch of Dire "Invoke the Dire." for achieving all the achievements?

3. How many chapters will there be on full release, unless it's still up in the air?

1. The ability to change the difficulty (Calamity) on active profiles will happen before full release. Also I still see no reason for a save reset to happen and we will continue to try to avoid that.
2. This achievement is earned as a random chance from clicking on the Dire icon on either the main menu or pause menu. That is all it is. There is not an all achievements one yet.
3. The target is approximately 100 chapters. Text is already written but I may still rewrite / cut / merge / expand anything that is not already published.

Any idea when we will be getting the full version? It says on the main page that early access will be for about 2 months, and in about another week, it will be 3 months since the game came out. So are we going to see the full version soon?

Some estimates changed because of changes in content such as single chapters going from 3 layouts long to 9, it adds up. We're doing our best to stay productive and keep our spirits up while we focus on what needs to be in 1.0 release.
Thank you very much for the info, Pkeod. Just wanted to know the approx. time, so I can look forward to the time when I will be restarting the game, and play the whole game from the beginning again.

Since you haven't reached your goal of release out of EA in January and it is now March, any clues as to when you're going to release the full game? I'm on my second play thru and really enjoying it but I miss the pets etc. Pure is building up to the extreme! lol

Right now we're working on content for the next 2 major updates. After the 2nd major update we should be super near 1.0! I'll be able to talk about the first update once it's live. :hype:

We have internal dates right now we're trying to stick to. Extra time has been needed as we've made some significant changes to the structure of the game in a few ways and decided to focus on big rollout updates toward leaving Early Access. I want to share more about what will arrive before 1.0 but have to keep quiet for now. :icyfaerie:
Will you be changing the cheevos much? If you are, will you perhaps be including a "100% Heroic cleared" or something to that affect. In other words, will I be rewarded for my OCD ways for clearing all hands Heroic? :D

Also, I hope you aren't going to do something really awful like reset all of our progress once you do a full release. I think I might have to rage quit then and I don't think I've ever done that in a solitaire game before or in any game for that matter. xD
FreakinGamer... I am obsessive compulsive too when it comes to clearing all hands (and with all 3 stars) when I play solitaire games, so I can understand your request, although to me it doesn't matter whether I get rewarded for that. Knowing I have achieved 100% clearance with every hand is enough for me.

That's not in the game but we could add it as a Secret Feat. In Dire, we are being careful to not put achievements on the Steam API which are too intense / grindy / lucky to get. Dire will be huge at release, bigger than it is now, so it would be asking too much for all Heroic Clears to be an achievement. :sadisthappy:

We will not be resetting anything on full release at this point. We do not anticipate the need, no breaking changes would require it.

Thanks for answering my post. Well like I said to Valdy, I already clear all hands Heroic know matter how much content you put there. It's just a personal obsession. LOL. But glad to hear things will be much grander and maybe you'll include more cheevos as I've cleared all but the pet one. I'm not really a cheevo hunter or anything just curious about the rest of the game too. Glad to hear you won't reset all progress as well. Keep up the hard work and looking forward to the complete game soon! :steamthumbsup:
I can collect material, but I can't see how much I got of it in total, is it there but just hidden for a future patch?

Did you make it harder to gain pure gold, or just keeping the numbers down compared to your other games and things will just be cheaper to buy with it instead?
Or maybe one just make less pure gold depending on the difficulty one opt into?
