Game seems to start, sound works, but I just see a blank, white window. Any ideas?

I have an X-Box type of controller and although I selected "joypad" for player 1, the game does not respond to it. Is this a bug, or is it possible that my controller isn't compatable with the game?

Is it possible to save the game after each level or we have to accomplish a minimum amount of levels to have it saved automatically?
