Mac Catalina: Running Cold Waters
To run Cold Waters on Catalina simply navigate to the App itself and run it directly.

Cold Waters is a universal app (32 and 64 bit compatible) , however Steam is incorrectly detecting it as 32 bit only. Running it outside the Steam client solves this issue.

Excellent news - thanks for the info.
thanks for the tip!
How do you run it outside of the Steam client? If I click on either the desktop icon or the link in the applications folder it starts Steam before starting
I can confirm this works. I just clicked on the desktop icon for Cold Waters, and it started normally. This is after Steam told me the app would no longer run in Catalina. I actually uninstalled a bunch of other games but I left Cold Waters because I remembered this sticky post.
Hi, my game launches but I can only hear it playing sound in the background, but there is no image - only my own desktop. Could you please tell me how to fix this?

This thread might be relevant to your issue:

As an update to this the game now launches fine (again) from the Steam launcher. No need to directly open the app in Finder. Steam still gives the 32 bit warning but you can ignore it.

@KFG

I was talking to Steam Support about this general issue, of stuff that they say runs on MacOS but doesn't, and stuff they say doesn't run on MacOS that does (eg Cold Waters, also eg Metro 2033).

They told me that they classify games based only on information provided about the game by the publisher, and can't verify that themselves. So potentially you, KFG, can contact them and ask them to change the classification.

However it's not clear that they have any tagging system in place than can distinguish a game that can run on 64 bit-only MacOS from one that can not. So you might want to give them a shove in the direction of supporting this important distinction in their tagging.

I know that you have more important things to do right now, but Steam is incorrectly advertising your game as not running on modern MacOS, when in fact it runs fine on Catalina. And actually only a very small proportion of historic MacOS games run on Catalina. So that is possibly something of an opportunity.
You can still play Cold Waters on macOS Big Sur, but you have to use options and click “Accept” to clear the white borders on startup. Tested on 2019/2020 model of 16-inch MacBook Pro with Radeon Pro 5600M.

I’ll wait if anyone confirms the game works on Apple Silicon via Rosetta 2.
Useful info, thanks.
What about Monterey and how do i do that?
I just tested CW on my M1max and the framerate is very smooth! (although my laptop got very hot very quickly...)
how do i get mods on the Imac
The file structure is the same so the process is exactly the same as on PC - unpack into the override folders.

I have not progressed beyond Catalina, not until I get my Mojave alt-boot set up so I can run 32 bit games, like Steve Jobs intended. Until then I will not be upgrading to Veranda or Verizon or whatever the latest MacOS is called this week.

However I expect it will be fine, the key hurdle was Catalina where they removed 32 bit support and the game runs fine without it.
