When the next update leaves experimental, the campaign will be complete. The game is fun as is.

FWIW, the game was fun a couple of years ago, too. Aliens stopped vising Earth at some point (day ~ 300?) because the rest wasn't implemented yet. The experience was worth it however, like the learning of "what you want is not what you get".
So I was never disappointed playing X2 early on.

Besides the fun there are other points. For example if it's feature-complete, if it's stable and so on.

The game may be fun but having no end-game content.

This is already answered. You can beat the game on the experimental branch. It just has placeholder art and text.

How does this play / compare to original UFO defense?
I recently played a bit of the original - openXCOM extended. The original has such a good atmosphere but no matter what you do - it's ANCIENT looking.

It's fairly similar. No 2AP ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ from the recent XCOM installments, impactful research, even last alien problem persists somewhat. Besides, it has character "classes" depending on loadout (and stats, ofc), and each class is fairly useful in its niche.

tl;dr: a true spiritual successor to ye olde UFO/X-COM games.
