Glittermitten Grove

Glittermitten Grove

Black screen only
It launches (however slowly, the sound keeps cutting and CPU usage is pretty high) but I only ever see a black screen. That is true in windows and fullscreen, and whichever display settings i choose (let's say fastest/600x800)
I have a decent computer, 5 year old that can run most steam games with no problem.
Once i let it load a bit, if i click randomly in the black window i can tell that the game has started or at least it changed menus) but can't see anything.

Ok, so everything past the resolution selector is totally black? Or are there some parts that you can see?

If you've got a dedicated graphics card, try making sure that's enabled, because it's currently using integrated graphics. Though if integrated graphics is all you've got, it should work if it's an Intel HD Graphics 3000 or above (though I don't know of anything from that line that would produce a black screen like that).

If you're not sure how to check, you can hit the windows key, type "dxdiag", hit return, press the Save All Information button, and that'll make a file with graphics hardware info I can use to check for incompatibilities.

First time running dxdiag (or steam for that matter) in a while, it looks like the anniversary update corrupted a driver DLL. Bottom line, it's not just your game :) everything 's foobared :(
Craig Timpany  [developer] 31 Dec, 2016 @ 9:30pm
Ah, that sucks. Anyway, case closed!
RestoreTheDay 21 Sep, 2017 @ 8:54am
Actually not closed... i managed to fix most of the games but Grove stays the same, just blackness.
DXDiag output follows.

PS: please send hugs to Rosemary from Vianney if you know her!

Oh! I just saw this, sorry about the delayed response.

That dxdiag output still looks screwy to me. In particular, these two lines:
"Card name: Intel(R) HD Graphics"
"Driver Name: aticfx64.dll,aticfx64.dll,aticfx64.dll,amdxc64.dll"

All of those ATI and AMD DLLs are for AMD Radeons. For Intel integrated graphics I'd expect DLLs starting with "IGD".

I understand in some laptops with both hardware, AMD's Catalyst Control Center switches between AMD and Intel hardware based on how demanding the app is, but at any given point I'd imagine the drivers and the (active) hardware would match.

If you're sure there's a Radeon in there, games are well behaved in general and you've got Catalyst installed, I'd check the settings there to see if there's anything about switching GPUs, and see if turning it off has any effect on Glittermitten.
RestoreTheDay 6 Nov, 2017 @ 9:13am
Hi Craig, thanks! I just did the windows10 install and they detected a Radeon but who knows.
your advice worked though! Changing the AMD setting from 'performance' to 'power saving' somehow fixed everything. Thanks :)
Humblurt 28 Dec, 2017 @ 12:36pm
I think I may be having a similar problem. When I launch the screen I can select the graphics options, but the window with the game comes up black. I can hear the soundtrack just fine, though. Messing with the GPU switching settings has not helped me.

Hey there DungeonFood, your black screen looks entirely different to RestoreTheDay's (believe it or not).

Apparently the IndexOutOfRange error in RecreateDisplayList means Unity couldn't find a suitable display for some reason. When you start the game a graphics options window pops up. What do your monitor and resolution options look like? Does it work in Windowed mode?

There's a thread here saying Unity can't handle display scaling from the graphics driver settings, so maybe that's worth looking into if you use that. It seems to work fine with the built-in Windows display scaling though.

Hi Craig, thanks so much for the speedy response!

I have a whole bunch of different resolution options in the graphics options window popup, but there are no monitor options at all. That dropdown menu is just blank.

Fullscreen won't open at all, displaying this notification:
Couldn't switch to requested monitor resolution
Switching to resolution 0x0 failed, trying lower one
Switching to resolution 0x0 failed, trying lower one
All resolution switches have failed
Screen: could not switch resolution (1024x768 fs=1 hz=0)

Windowed mode will open, but that's when I get the black screen issue (but sound works).

Yeah, there should be at least one monitor in that drop down, even in a single monitor set up.

Does it help if you go into the AMD Radeon settings, go to 'Display', and change the Scaling Mode to Full Panel?

If that doesn't work, could you tell me more about your monitor/laptop display? For example, resolution and Hz, whether it''s high DPI and if there's any funky stuff like wide gamut colour or G-sync.

Hey Craig,

Somehow, out of nowhere, the game started working after 4 hours of messing with my graphics drivers and options. Radeon recently updated to Adrenalin software, and Windows recently updated to Windows 10, so there are a lot of variables at play. I've long had issues with switchable graphics between Intel and Radeon, too. I have no idea what finally allowed me to see "Display 1" as an option in Glittermitten, but it's there now and seems to work at the moment. Really looking forward to playing the game at long last!

For the record, when I went into AMD Radeon settings' "Display" tab, it just said (and still says) "No displays are currently connected to AMD products."

Oh wow, now AMD's control panel stuff can't see the monitor? That sorta sounds like you're now on integrated graphics full time, somehow. (Which Glittermitten will work fine on, but it's a possibility to keep in mind if you hit framerate problems in other games)

I'll see if I can find out more about an issue with switchable graphics with an eye to writing a faq entry.
