My save file is gone... [solution]
Sorry for the ones who have trouble with their save files! It seems players' save files were corrupted after the last update (2 weeks ago). Unfortunately you need to start over.

Important note: new players who are missing their save data after the first play, please accept the local storage of your Flash Player. If you have windows could you follow the steps in this url? http://www.isunshare.com/windows-10/change-local-storage-settings-for-flash-player-in-windows-10.html

If you use a Mac, make it like this: http://www.macrumors.com/2011/03/08/adobe-releases-flash-player-10-3-beta-with-preferences-integration/

Okay, so I´m experiencing the problem of save games gone missing as well, even after accepting the local storage of my Flash Player (Windows 7). I had the same problem with another game from Steam (i.e. Machinarium) and in their Discussions did I find the source of the problem AND a way to work around it.

The problem is that:

The save system is basically the same as if you played a flashgame on a website like NGs. In other words, you're doomed if you clear your browser cache/cookies. The developers designed this little jewel of a game the same way as a browser flash game. It would have saved lot of time to everyone if they had set the save location in the steam game folder, instead.

So I’m doomed, because I let my browser delete all my browser nasties after closing it. However, as mentioned above, there is a solution. It is not a perfect fix, but it works alright.

So the problem is really quite stupid. The game puts its saves in a temp folder. This folder gets deleted every time you restart your computer. This is at least true for windows 7. I have found a way to get around this with a bit of work. You need to find where RustyLakeRoots hides its saves on your computer. If it has deleted your save, the folder will not exist.

1. You need to start the game, make a save and then close the game.

2. Next, find the save file location. I use the following address:

C:\Users\[name of user]\AppData\Roaming\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects

and then click on the folder named a string of random letters and numbers then local host and a bunch of other folders that are the only ones available until you find RustyLakeRoots.exe (which I can't seem to search for even when it is there). Alternatively, google a file path for your system.

3. If you can find this file, you can save your save games. Simply copy the Tree.sol file and paste it somewhere safe, like the desktop. DO THIS WHENEVER YOU FINISH PLAYING RUSTYLAKEROOTS.

4. To start from where you last were, load the game, make a save file, quit. Find the newly created save file folder, delete the .sol file with your 0 progress game save and then copy the .sol file from your desktop or where ever and paste it into the newly minted save data folder.

So yes, it is a major pain in the butt, but it technically works.

To make things easier I made a shortcut to the \#SharedObjects folder, so it’s easier to find back my savegames. The destination of the shortcut can't be the final folder (RustyLakeRoots.exe), because the folder named a string of random letters and numbers, is the one that is deleted every time.

If rustylakeroots.exe isn't showing up anywhere under shared objects folder how do you manage to see it, cause as bizzenva says "if you can find this file you can save it". I don't know how to google a file path for my system.

I did the flash player settings (although had already been allowing everyone) I just want to be able to manually save my game, as an apparently story related achievement didn't unlock for me. Achievements had been working in first update, but since I uploaded the 2nd game update the achievement didnt' unlock (and I did verify my files)

Bosgnoom's instructions look outdated... I found rusty lake roots files here: %AppData%\com.RustyLake.RustyLakeRoots haven't tested to see if backing them up will preserve saved games but probably so
