Ships don't list heavily (And ship breakups)
I have a thread on the main discussions, though in hindsight I figured it would be good to put thing topic in here as well.

Essentially ships don't seem to list very much. With ships, we have:

-Trim: Or the pitch of the ship in the water. Think of a plane taking off and pitching up to get off the ground, or the titanic, and how it pitched in a way that the stern was sticking far up into the air. This is the trim of a ship.

-List: This is the side to side leaning action that a boat has. Think of Lusitania and how she listed heavily moments after the torpedo struck her port side.

Now I will say, the actual trim of the ships seems to be modelled quite well, and I quite like how ships have varying times they take to sink. Ships can have quite a high trim, and if enough of the hull is still out of the water, the ship can split in two.

However, if you strike a ship on it's side, in the middle, you'd expect the list, or leaning action of the ship to get quite high provided the torpedo strike opened a very big hole, which in most cases they do (use cases remain). Usually these strikes would result in a dangerous list for the vessel, and putting it at risk of capsizing. However, these seems to not be the case. I've sank around 9-10 ships so far with this update, and each time, without fail, with dead center strikes, ships only seem to get lists of about 5-10 degrees at the maximum. This seems a bit funky. Granted I've only experimented on Empire ships, as my career hasn't progressed to when Liberties, and C3's would be present, but you'd imagine to see decent lists of about 30-40 degrees, or full capsizing moments in rare cases with really any given ship.

To touch up real quick on ship breakups, it's only happened to me once, but the time it did happen to me, it looked quite odd. The entire ship seemed to V break, the entire stern section came back up, and resank. If I recall correctly, the bow section that broke also for some reason fell into the water and didn't seem to have much of any buoyancy. I would expect after the separation, that the end that was filled with water would quickly submerge, instead of coming back up and sinking the opposite way. While the one that was more or less dry, would float, and sink in about a minute or two.

In terms of use cases, yes you may get some torpedo strikes that don't spring leaks that are extremely devastating, in these cases, flooding may occur more evenly. Resulting in more minor lists and an even flooding, causing the ship to go down more or less level with the water, but again, like capsizing, would be more of a rare case.

Does this mean the current system is bad? No, not by any means, and I quite like the new system, I just think it needs a bit more refinement is all. The listing issue is my primary concern as I really rather not have to resort to mods to correct it, and the breakup being more of a minor issue seeing as breakups don't happen very often.

ALSO DEVELOPERS PLEASE RELEASE THAT INTERACTIVE COMPARTMENT MAP I NEED IT IN MY LIFE :P :steamsad:

Very well written, and I think it would be a nice touch for the game.

From what I recall about damage control, captains would try to counter flood compartments in ships to avoid heavy listing. However was this just in warships above a certain size, would it be available to a merchant ship? And obviously, this could only do so much to correct list and prevent a capsize depending on the damage done.

Your pictures say SPO... You know, a mod, not base game which is being discussed here.

yes, I made that mod. I am happy that they have finaly improved the damage system, mostly repeating the features of the mod. However in the SPO mod I have also achieved better listing, and sometimes even capsizing as you see on the pictures. What I am saying I would know exactly what they would need to change in the code for the things you were asking. I will see if they improve that as well, but if not, I can add that feature with mod. The old SPO mods aint working anymore in the new damage system. But I could make a new version for the new damage system.

Oh ok, my bad. I misunderstood. Thanks for clarifying!
