About the legit ways to play Outrun franchise today
Hi everyone,

I miss the Outrun games so much and I'm searching for legit ways to play these games.

Although it's not possible to buy any Outrun games here on Steam, it's still possible to play the classic arcade version inside Yakuza 0. Looks like in Shenmue too.

I'm even playing Horizon Chase and Slipstream, trying to scratch this itch.

Please, post here if you know any other ways to buy Outrun on any platforms today for a fair price.
Even on PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.
Let's try to make a list of ways to play it, even if it's inside another game or collection.

I can't believe SEGA forgot this franchise.

Thanks

Plenty of arcade drifting in this one with super environments to boot.

There's fantastic ports on Nintendo 3DS and Switch of Outrun. If you need PC then check out this: http://reassembler.blogspot.com/p/cannonball-open-source-outrun-engine.html

I been a massive fan of Outrun since the mid 80's. I even bought a nintendo switch to play the old version.

But OP, check these comparison videos of outrun on different systems over the last 35 years. :steamhappy:

Thanks, guys!

This video is amazing!
It would be great if they launch some kind of remastered collection.
If they are not launching a new game, it would be nice to have a definitive collection to play on any platform.

Im very fond of the spectrum 128k version myself, played it to death as a kid on the speccy. Maybe because im viewing it though rose tinted glasses or just looking back to the good old day.

Necro-ing this post to inform you that if you have a Nintendo Switch, Sega has released a VERY good port/remaster of the orginal Outrun on that system titled Sega Ages: Outrun. It runs at a solid 60fps, and has a bunch of new features and even new music, including a new version of an Outrun 2 music track, exclusive to this version.

The port itself is pretty cheap, so if you have the time/money, I very highly suggest everyone take a look at the Sega Ages version of Outrun.

This game was the reason I bought my switch lite in the first place... I believe the switch's sega ages outrun is better than the arcade itself. Loving it, I just set everything to easy and long timer and just play for fun listening to the sound track as I go.

It's also available as a Retroarch core. The core works better than the standalone program for me. The standalone program sometimes fails to recognize my triggers for some reason, but the core has been perfect every time. Truly, the only thing of consequence that the Retroarch core does worse than the Nintendo Switch port is that it doesn't have the extra songs. Still, Cannonball does keep the audio arcade perfect, but you can even make it better than perfect if you get the fixed drum samples, so either way you can't go wrong.

Seconding all of this. Outrun on the Switch is great, decent upgrades to the arcade version. It is only $7.50 when on sale.

The free Cannonball engine is a great arcade port with plenty of customization.

Outrun 2006:Coast to Coast is available on the Internet Archive, or MyAbandonware. As far as I know, this is THE only way to get a copy of the game on PC.

Alternately, you can run it in PCSX2 (PS2 Emulator), or get a copy for the actual PS2 or XBOX hardware.

I would buy this game in a second if it was available on GOG or Steam.

Thanks for your answer!

You know, Ubisoft brought back Scott Pilgrim, Aspyr with Stubbs the Zombie.
I don't see why this can't become common.

I still hope they bring it back someday so the fans can show support and keep the franchise alive.

I would also buy instantly, I miss this franchise a lot.
Just imagine if they make an Outrun anthology.

The reason OutRun 2, 2006 and Onlive Live Arcade aren't available anymore is due to the Ferrari licensing. Same thing with After Burner Climax.

Wish I could own this game on Steam. Played it to death on every system I could. Maybe someday.

This is the Fox and the Grapes but in reversal, Of course, if you buy a $300 system for just one game, you'll think highly of that game. But I doubt it runs better than in the arcade.

It is a bummer it is not available for PC, if the matter is the license they can modify the cars and the Ferrari logos but Sega is a big company and they just do something if the marketing and the legal department tells them to do so.

Not everybody has 300$ to buy a console for just one game and Nintendo has awful anticonsumers policies and I won't support them buying something from them.

So we are stuck between emulation, the cannonball engine or waiting until Sega goes bankruptcy then some small indie company would buy the Franchise and release a new OutRun.

It is old post, but this game had physical PC DVD release. I grabbed one in ebay.
