Interacting with NPCs in towns?

So I just decided to start playing the game, probably a bit late to the party, but I noticed NPCs in town have some sort of interaction symbol, and no key or button I press seems to give me the option to interact. Controls doesn't tell me much either. What do?

I never really realised until after I finished the game but I guess 'up' is no longer the universal interact button in platformers anymore.

you'll want to use whatever key you assigned to 'UP' in the controls when that symbol appears.

That's just it, that was the literal first button I pressed. I have tried every button on my controller. I'm using a first-party xbox one controller connected via USB if that helps anything

Alright, so further messing around has revealed it's analogue stick up, as the game defaults to analogue stick for directional input. It didn't even occur to me that it'd be true for an input like this too. Thanks!
