Wasnt there a mechanic which penetrates armor and shields? I am pretty sure there was.
There was also a counter to it. Dont remember it now. Its been sometime I dont play Avorion.

Could be plasmatic weapons (Railguns are the worst-I use plasmatics myself).
Railguns for the win, mmmmmmmm. Try covering your ship in a thin layer of armor and then stone and then armor. Then add a subsystem to make impenetrable shields. in vanilla anti-matter wrecks armor and hull. ionized projectiles pass right through shields unless they are impen.

my guess was about cannon's volumetric explosion, but internals are broken by any weapon (any place, not corners)

Cannons seem reasonable. Have you tried integrity field generators?

(I think I meant 'ionised'-shield pen-have been playing other games...) Railguns that ignore Shields are nasty, especially paired with RG Impalers.

I've noticed some situations where collisions will damage blocks past the outer hull of a ship. I've also heard rumors of people getting fragged by the MAD Science boss despite having a hull made of stone.

My theory - and one I think I've heard from others - is that shots sometimes "skip" through individual blocks if the server doesn't catch them fast enough (and remember that singleplayer is still run on a server; it's just on your own machine). That would mean they would completely bypass a single-ply shell of external armor, where thinner armor blocks would be more susceptible to this effect.

It's not a nice thing to hear for ships that are already built - especially if you've got edge blocks - but it might be worth double-layering your external armor. Another tactic would be to divvy up your ship with internal armor around functional components. That'd have the added benefit of backup armor if you ever start losing blocks to non-penetrating hits.

I'll be up-front and say I don't have any hard evidence or reliable test cases of this scenario, so I could be totally wrong. Still, can't hurt to put some plating on the inside. If you're still at the design phase, all you've got to do is scale up a little to account for the added mass.

my latest experiment was to increase "empty space" from 4.5 to 12 blocks: doesnot help.

next steps will be
1 adding second layer of armour (around internal component area)
2 increasing armour thickness (right now it is 1 block)
3 removing empty space increasing armour thickness (it can be easier to calculate bullets when no empty space present). but i totally dont understand cannon damage nature: is it "volumetrick" or its just visual? so i accept that step will make my ship meat to cannons
4 switch to CASE design, but in this case most shiny feature of the game will be dropped :(
so covering internal components with armor helps. looks like bullet point of damage is calculating by path from inside to ouside, till it ends in empty space
now i need to know - do i need external layer of armor at all, or just increasing thickness is enough

one layer of 1-block armor around components is not enough: damage goes to covered area.
increasing to 2-block armor seems ok, so no need of empty space, just more armor.

tests was in avorion area, but not near center, may be in center armour should be scaled more.

updated: near center damage goes through 2block of armour :(

results near center:
2 block of ogonite armour is not enough
3 block of trinium armour is enough
