GFWL Removal and More of Your Frequently Asked Questions Answered
UPDATE 01/04/2015

Hi all,

First up I want to say sorry for just how long it has taken to move DiRT 3 to Steamworks and I would also like to thank you all for keeping up the pressure on us to move it over. Every day I have over a hundred notifications on my Steam account, there are threads thousands of comments deep about it and countless Tweets and Facebook messages - while you’d think it would be the kind of thing that would bug the hell out of me, you’d be wrong.

It just goes to show that you guys love DiRT and care about it a lot; I’m hoping you’ll bring that passion with you for where we’re going next...

...Anyway before I get into trouble, I’m pleased to announce that DiRT 3 is now available with 100% less Games for Windows Live.

Store Page Link

As a thank you for your patience over this last year we’ll be upgrading everybody who owns DiRT 3 to the DiRT 3 Complete Edition, which will include all of our DLC for no extra cost.

If you currently have the GFWL version of DiRT 3 in your Steam Library you should now also have access to the DiRT 3 Complete Edition which should already be there in your list of owned games. To play it simply select it from your library and click install. (Give it some time to show up if you are checking this right after posting)

However if you own a boxed PC copy of DiRT 3 or have a Games For Window Live CD Key you can now activate that CD key on Steam.

To do so simply follow the below steps:
  • Load up your Steam Client
  • Click “Add a game” found in the bottom left of the window
  • Click “Activate a product on Steam”
  • Click “Next”
  • Follow the instructions and when asked enter your CD Key into the “Product Code” box (be sure to use CAPS and include the hyphens)
  • Hit “Next”
  • Your code will then be verified and the DiRT 3 Complete Edition will be added to your library
  • And you’re good to go!
Those who originally purchased the game via Steam will notice that the now old GFWL version of DiRT 3 will still be in your library. You will still be able to play this version but it will still include Games for Windows Live and you won’t have access to the Complete Edition content in the old version – nothing will have changed with that older version.

Due to the differences with the two versions unfortunately your save files will not be compatible with each other. We know it sucks and we are sorry but it was unavoidable.

As an added bonus if you also happen to own a Mac you will now have access to the DiRT 3 Complete Edition via Steam on that too.

And of-course we’ve also included a set of Steam Trading cards for you to collect and added all of the original DiRT 3 achievements.

Finally thank you again for sticking with us and a big thank you to the rather awesome people at Feral Interactive who helped us with the work.

Keep it lit.

UPDATE:

If it's not showing for you just give it a while to show up - To those asking I can confirm you will all get the Complete Edition if you already own a version of DiRT 3 with GFWL

... And no it's not an April Fools ;)

Great news. Will you add achievements to steamworks version?

Thank you! I hope this move will happen as soon as possible!
I have one question, thought: I've purchased some DLC (mostly cars pack). When the game, and DLCs, will be on Steamworks, will I have to pay that DLCs again?

There are a few different ways we can go about this and we haven't decided which one is best yet, as soon as I know more I'll let you know.

At the minute the honest answer is I really don't know, the DiRT team are stacked with the next project and freeing up peoples time to get this done is our biggest challenge, I just wanted to let you guys know that we are committed to getting it done. As for DiRT 1 & 2, it was part of the licencing deal that was set up with car manufacturers which expired.

Wat a pity there are many ppl like me who want Dirt despite owning a retail disc copy or 2 like me :) still want it in their steam collection, expired licence means no chance anymore period :( anyway many thanks i look forward to the patch & the end of GFLW

WTF! My Game Won't Start
Some users do have trouble starting the game, this seems to be an install/GFWL issue. Try downloading and installing the GFWL client manually and it should work fine Link[www.xbox.com]

Not in here :(

I have the Complete Edition of DiRT 3, will the included DLC be automatically added to my Steam account, once we're able to redeem our CD keys?

Anything is better than GFWL, so there is that.

Justbiglee, I'm really happy you guys are making the big step towards Steam platform, GFWL was poor home for Dirt3 and an absolute nightmare for us gamers. PS. I've just purchased Dirt3 now :)

Can't wait for GFWL to be removed and by the way this is a fantastic game! I know when Bioshock 2 got GFWL removed they included the DLC for all current owners of the game on Steam (as they couldn't tell who had and hadn't downloaded the DLC on GFWL)

Will this be the same for current owners of Dirt3?

awesome! I'm so happy to hear that

Dear Codies,

Can you (and other developers stop putting DRM) on your games. "But I'm afraid of piracy," you say and I think you are wrong. DRM including GFWL has hurt your sales from me. I rarely now purchase any game that is linked to DRM (except for steam) but even then I refuse to pay more than 10 dollars unless it is something I really want. I do not want to take the risk that my game will not work in the future or if I build a new PC, or put in a new motherboard. So instead of buying at full price I will pick it up on sale. Or "demo" it until it goes on sale. If in the future it stops working (ala my Dirt 2) and I only paid I few dollars I do not care. However, if I paid full price I'd be annoyed--probably enough to not purchase any new titles from said company.

TL;DR DRM is possibly hurting sale or lowering the price point at which people will buy your items and might actually lead some to pirate instead of paying for it so they don't have to worry about the game suddenly ceasing to work at some arbitray point in the future.
