what happened in this game?

I played this for over 200 hours already
Havent played for over a year now

It seemed it spiked very much in popularity
In september it peaked at 53k players

That growth is insane
What happened?
Just wondering if there's some explanation
They made some massive update or something that made the game more popular?
Don't understand how it suddenly become so much more popular

From 2016-2020
100-1k players or so

From 2020 to the end of 2022
1k - 2,6k players or so

From 2023 to now
2k to 43k players (peak at 53k)
