edit: i had wishlisted this before, and it popped up in my notifications due to the sale, which is nice, but this question is still relevant even though the original post is a bit older because the store page mentions "Broadband Internet connection" as a playing requirement?
I simply forgot to update my old post, after I hadn't received a reply - sorry. it doesn't make the issue less of a mystery: Why would someone list a non-existing requirement?
With that said, there are SP games really requiring an internet connection, and not only when you launch them for the first time. The reason is likely either DRM or the desire to collect information from players (who have to open an outbound connection to the game server). Or they can't or don't want to install the server software on the client PCs (in which case it's a deliberate design decision, which speaks for itself).
From a player perspective, whenever you invest in such a game, you accept the risk that access to the server is not possible, be it temporarily or permanently, sooner or later. I never take the risk, but it's everyone's decision.
