Well, she needed a weapon.

Axes might actually be the least random decision -- people living in an area with a lot of forest might be familiar with a similarly-named tool that could help with chopping wood, so using the same thing as a weapon might seem like a rather obvious idea.

But, we don't know whether the designers even thought about it. They might just have given her a weapon without wasting time on discussing a backstory for it.
