[modding guide] Create custom decals for ship painting!
As you are probably already aware it is now possible to customize your ship by painting decals as you like on your ships. It is also possible to include your custom made decals and here is the short guide for it using free {LÄNK BORTTAGEN} tool but you can also use any other image editor(like photoshop, gimp etc.) but you need to export the image in .dds format. Here is the guide for {LÄNK BORTTAGEN}:

{LÄNK BORTTAGEN}

1) Open the image you want to use(drag and drop into active window).
2) Create a blank canvas(new file) with 256x256 resolution.
3) Select new canavas and select the whole (white) background, you can do this with ctrl+a shortcut and press delete to clear the background (result is empty image).
4) Select the image from first window and paste it into blank canvas. Select "Keep canvas size".
5) While holding shift select right bottom corner and scale your image to fit the canvas width.
6) Hold the left mouse button on the image(but not in center) and pull it down to fit the middle of the image.

If you want your image to have reliable coloring in game:
7*) Select Adjustments -> Black and White. (this enables you to reliably color white surfaces in-game).
8*) Select Adjustments -> Invert Colors. (this enables you to reliably color non-white surfaces in-game).

OR

skip 7*) & 8*) if you want your colors to stay true to the picture but it will be harder to color it in-game (prefered selected color is white, other colors might seem awkward with this mode).

9) Save the file as .dds format.
10) Put the .dds file/s into "GameRoot\Data\Textures\Decals" (located in the game install folder, usually "Steam\steamapps\common").
11) Start the game and apply your decal on the ship in-game and PLAY with it!

that looks cool, will i be able to use my profile image or does it have to be a certain type of file ?
Certain type of file (.dds format). You can import your picture to {LÄNK BORTTAGEN} and then save it as .dds and it should work.

Even if the image is distorted in decal picker it will still work but the native resolution for decals is 256x256.

Trying to make decals I downloaded 4 small black+white jpg-pictures.
One below the 252x252 size the others are slightly bigger.
two of the bigger (260x300) I converted directly to
dds included them in the decals mod and they show up
in game -no problem-of course the "edges" are cut of.
The other (original)converted JPGs didnt work at all, the game freezes when I cycle tru the decals in customizing.
when resizing the two JPG-pictures that worked before
to 252x252 and converting them, the game freezes again.
I used at first Gimp for resizing, then for the second time Irfanview.
I noticed that the resized JPG Pictures produced
by the two Programs have slighly different sizes, so
there must be some kind of variation in the JPG-Format.
Is there something when saving the resized JPGs I have
to look for ?.
P.S.
Other "free" Imgageprocessing/Converting software
always seem to demand the Installation of some king of advertising software/Browser changes or at least registration etc.
I am a little bit reluctant about this, so I downloaded
and used the software mentioned above.

Double check that you are using images converted to .dds picture format. If it is still crashing please send us your Log.txt and image you are trying to insert and mention this thread to customersupport@starpointgemini.com
