Beta feature: Manual Save Points
This was posted in the "Patch notes v.1.01" thread, but thought it deserved its own thread.

With patch 1.01, we have implemented a new "beta" feature that allows players to manually save at every framed map in the game world. Please note that this is a big change to the game, which wasn't designed with this feature in mind. Whilst we have tested it internally without any observed issues, your mileage may vary.

Since this is a "beta" feature, it is only available by opting in to the "beta" branch of the game on Steam. To access it:
  1. In your Steam Library, right-click on "Everybody's Gone to the Rapture"
  2. Select "Properties"
  3. In the Properties window, click on the "BETAS" tab
  4. Under "Select the beta you would like to opt into:", select "map_save"
  5. Click on the "CLOSE" button at the bottom of the window. Steam will then download an update for the game.

Please note that the manual save system will not be available:
  • while a scene is playing, or for up to 20 seconds after the end of a scene
  • if you are in the vicinity of a manually-activated scene (even if said scene isn't currently playing)
  • during time-of-day transitions between chapters

In case you encounter an issue with any of your save files, it's possible to revert to a previous save by doing the following:
  1. Navigate to your save folder: C:\Users\<USERNAME>\Saved Games\Rapture\SaveGames
  2. Delete the two most recent files in the folder (or move them to a different folder if you want to keep them): one has the *.csf extension, the other the *.meta extension.
  3. Start the game again and select "Continue" – the game should load in the penultimate save location.

how's manual save works? I already update the map_save, but I don't know how it works, since there is no save option in game. please help!

I would like to know this as well. There isn't a mention of manual saving anywhere in the game.

EDIT: Okay... I re-read your post more carefully. The option to save is ONLY in front of locations where this a map of Shropshire framed (like the bus station). I was able to save successfully. This is definitely an improvement, however... any possibility of posting a comprehensive map with the save locations??? Maybe I'm just spoiled, but I do think having at least a map showing all save-points would be very beneficial... I know for example, if I have to rush out the house or something like that, its nice to be able to save game quickly and not meander back to the only other save-point I know about... especially because the character moves slowly.

BEFORE EDIT: I'm loving this game so far. As other users said, I also was frustrated with the weird saving function... it was too unpredictable and unreliable. And frustrating to lose progress and have to repeat.

I'm still new to the game... how do I activate the manual BETA save??? I don't see an option to save the game in the menu. (please keep in mind most of us gamers are used to there being a very obvious SAVE option).

I understand 1.) no saving during a scene or 20 secs after, 2.) being in viicitnity of manually active scene and 3.) Time transitions

Please elaborate specifically HOW to access the manual save option via the menu or elsewhere. Maybe post screen shots of how to save with the new BETA? That way there is no confusion with players.

I'd like to keep playing the game, but I'm nervous to lose progress if I can't figure out how to manually save. THANKS :)

There are framed MAPS around town. For example... there is one at the BUS TOP across from the STARS AT NIGHT bar (close to where you start).

Approach the FRAMED MAP at the red BUS STATION and it clearly gives you the option to save.

This is the only Map I know of so far in town (there is one where you start in the game too... near the Observatory). The frustration is you have to find and then know where all the maps are.

wow. thank you. i wanted this so bad....the wife was a little upset when we needed to go somewhere and I couldnt stop for like 20 min because I didn't want to loose 20 min of exploration. yay!

lol....manual saving is much harder than a save button on the menu. Different game engines save differently....it's complicated and requires much coding and reworking the engine (which I believe is cry engine in this case)

[EDIT: So i just reinstalled the game, and It's still at where i last saved. I'm still not sure what happened lol ? ]

So not sure if this is related, But i ended up Setting my game to beta for the map save, but when i went to shift + tab while playing, my game crashed for the first time ever and i ended up saying screw it, Turned off my computer and went to sleep. I just NOW opened up steam to play this again and i have to Re-install the game? I DEFF Didnt delete the game and lose everything i had played. That and i haven't seen it on the forums but this is the ONLY time it actually happened [When turning it on beta]. I am hoping i can save what i had lost but really Sad if its gone since i can't find any save files [even the posted above one i cant find]. I just wanted to let you know what i experienced just incase something like this happens to someone else? .. [Btw the saves at the map were working perfectly and i had no problem with that. ]

This feature appears to be working for me. Just throught you might like to put a more obvious sign on the screen once they've clicked a map, so they understand what clicking a map does. If you don't know where to look on the screen, clicking a map would appear to be something useful for advancing the game, but then appears to do nothing.

This solution of saving isn't much better than what's already there isn't it?!As I understand it you have to be at specific places to be able to save. And save how? Please guys, make a saving option in the menu and a shortcut key to use ingame like in all pc games.Like you should have done in the first place.

There are a lot of savepoints. They are the maps in the game You're rarely out of sight of one. It's really all you need.
