Okabe is forced to mature as the story progresses. It's a core aspect of the game's themes and narrative. The VN is a slow burn, especially the first few chapters, but it's worth it, imho.

When you discover why he's a chuuni, it'll be worth it. (And he taps the chuuni brakes at about chapter 6, aka the incident)

He gets better, but you need to remember that you, as a player are not meant to enjoy everything in this game by design. It is part of the narrative experience to find certain aspects of characters obnoxious, obtuse, or stupid. It is in part because of these flaw's that this game is a narrative gem.

Yes Okabe Rintaro gets wayyyyy better (If you don't believe me and don't mind spoilers just download "Steins Gate 0" and see how much he changed)

I also hated his weirdness when I first started the game and almost refunded the game. I am super glad that I didn't! It is soooooo good actually.

Also like almost all the characters are cool and likable. Faris is my FAVORITE!!!!
