I don't know about the pits, I think they take 1/4 of your health but I'm not too sure.
As for the Cart Racing, it's pathetically easy once you find the shortcuts and you don't game over if you lose the race, so even if you're bad at the racing it's just a matter of trial and error.

I know the one thing I gotta watch out for is the temple of Carnook or whatever.

just died to the beetle with my file at 98%. didnt realize it was a one-hit-kill. This is what made me give up.

The only instant kills in Ty 2 are the Rhino of Carnook chase and touching lava while in a Bunyip that's not meant to go in lava, which I think is only possible in the final level with the Shadow Bunyip. Ironically, Ty himself touching lava only takes a hit of damage.

Otherwise, things should be fine so long as you get the Golden Paw upgrade whenever you can. After defeating Patchy, you can farm the beach area for opals with it's 3,000 and three 500 bags.

As someone that managed to get the achievements, you can lose the minigames / side-missions (like the submarine rescue one in my case, as an example) all you want without losing the save file. I assume actual deaths like platforming, jeep driving, and bunyip piloting trigger the game over (can't exactly tell because my first hardcore run was deathless except for that single loss in the submarine mission).

i cant collect 4 pictures in the sulfur rocks map they drop but do not count for me and i am stuck at 99%

I always wanted to beat it on hardcore because ps4 doesn't have that option, completed it today :)

If Rusty Bucket Bay from Banjo-Kazooie taught me anything, it's that you should always do sections like these as early as possible when doing such playthroughs. That way, you're doing the most stressful part of the game before knocking out everything else that's a lot more forgiving of player error, so if you do end up dying at that part, you're not redoing nearly as much of the game as you would if you saved it for last.

I learned from experience on my normal playthrough that this section was instant death so I knew to do this part as soon as I could on my Hardcore playthrough. I attempted it at around 34% and 2 hours in, and once I got through that was when I started going for everything else which was smooth sailing for me. So much so, I was able to beat it 100% on my first attempt much like I did the first game.
