Master of Orion 1

MOO1 Client Check: Identify this ship
So it's asking me to identify a ship in order to continue playing.

First, that should just be fixed.

Second... provide the document?

That's an artifact of the old copy protection scheme -- it doesn't matter what you answer.
I borrowed the original game disks from a friend when this one came out and I got hooked. I memorized every one of the ships--that was in 1994-- I can still match them up (I still have the original version) even though I don't have the manual. I was 13. This was also the driving force behind my entry into the realm of data recovery--it would delete the save file and you had to know how to use the undelete command and the file header was usually gone...oh the memories...

I can still remember a few of them, but most have faded from certitude. I still try to guess, though.
WG Recompiled the EXE to pop out the copy protection!?
I found this link: Still... don't sell a broken game: http://harqueb.us/?page_id=938
I wonder why you call it broken... since it doesn't close - as it used to - when you give a wrong answer *ponders*
You can click on any of the answers, game will just continue.
They broke the game so that you can play it -- if it weren't broken, the game would stop with a wrong answer. Yes, the game IS broken -- it's broken in a way that you should be thankful for.
If you really feel you need to quiz yourself, there is a reference card with the ships located in the install directory along with the manual.
I didn't realize it would allow for any incorrect selection. I didn't want to restart if it closed, since I knew that's what happened from playing way back in the day. One thing I never liked about steam games is it's never clear where the game is actually installed.

Admittedly I didn't dig far enough, it was here:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Master of Orion 1\ReferenceCard.pdf

I'm guessing the copy protection bypass was just a hack from back in the day as well, or else there would have been *some* indication I could look it up or just click to bypass.

A minor nuisance, but hey... not everyone will know or understand these things and just want to play.

Pointing the user to the DOSbox settings would be nice too.

There are different versions of the hack for this function in different versions. I know 2 options. The first is to replace the flag in the source file that disables this check with the value "checked". The second is to remove the jump on the code that triggers the player defeat function. Both changes can be fixed by a hacker with minimal experience.
